Serj Tankian, Shavo Odadjian, Daron Malakian, and John Dolmayan...

I am suprised no one has mentioned them here yet. They are pretty famous nowadays, and are very vocal about being Armenian, etc.

...Shavo says, “It’s time for the bands these kids are listening to to deliver something deeper than just ‘let’s party.’”

Now one year after the triumph of "Toxicity," System of a Down find themselves in an elite class of rock acts who’ve managed commercial hugeness with dignity in spades and nary a compromise on their resume. They’ve engendered a sound transcendent of trends or labels, a propulsive hybrid destined to flourish in any radio climate from here to forever. What sonic twists await us only they know, but we can rest assured knowing that their next offering, like those that have proceeded, will be born from a primal need to evade classification and emote loudly.

Daron says, "Everyone who knows me knows my music comes before anything. It comes before me. If someone said, "your music will live forever but you won't wake up tomorrow morning, I'd be like, 'Okay.' That's very fair to me."...

either way, their music is brilliant. Genuinly good raw music, and i think the passion which lies in the music is very relevant to not only armenian youth, but youth internationally.

i KNOW we are an aryan race you dork.

but it still shouldnt make us feel arrogent up our asses.

stfu with all the ' white' stuff being ' cooler', give me a break, dont freaking assume im saying it in those terms, or thinking that way.

i dont give a xxxx about feeling ' cooler' when i say caucasion, it doesnt freaking matter, we are still part of the caucasion race, and we ARE aryan . Same crap.

our blood is aryan, same crap as caucasion, aryan blood.

i am who i am, I'm an armenian who has aryan blood, okay next...
lets move on shall we ?

im not racist nor elitest, im just stating that we are an aryan race. It doesnt matter if our blood is aryan, and others are mixed, i still dont feel better than the next person beside me. We are apart of the HUMAN race. End of story.

have a nice day.

i was correcting what someone said incorrectly, and my point was, does it really matter what type of armenian they are ?(who cares ) we are all armenian anyway.

TigranJamharian
12-25-2003, 06:54 PM
bro i was joking about the differences between the words. but you should feel elitist you should feel high bro we are of the race that has shaped the history of this world. please dont start with that xxxx about being part of the "human race" damn. why dont we just say we are part of the animal race or the living race so then we can love cocharoaches and flowers and plants as much as other Armenians

TigranJamharian
12-25-2003, 06:56 PM
All Armenians must unite and keep our race pure from now on. Embrace the fellow Armenians and lets put away our trivial differences

whitelotus
12-25-2003, 07:18 PM
im not a 'bro' :P im a girl.

like i said before, it doesnt matter where we are from, or what type of armenian we are, because we ARE armenian, and thats all that should matter.

Its sad that we all sit and pick at one another for the different dialect in which we all speak, or the suttle or major differences in traditions , lifestyles or changes in culture that we all have from seperating one another. It pushes us away from one another every second of the day. We should unite instead of bicker about at eachother. Thats the difference between us and everyone else. We have so much hatred for the other that we forget that we have a bigger agenda to achieve in this world, for Armenians. We should put aside our differences like tigran said and lets go forward in our future together to reach a higher goal.

Its one thing to be proud of where you are from (yerevan, iran, russia, france etc), but its another......to feel as if you are higher then someone else because you are a certain type of armenian.

Lets get rid of that type of attitude and accept one another for who we all are.

System of a Down is having a concet on April 24th at the Greek.. Proceeds are going to the ANC and genocide recognition agenda. Good stuff. They advertised this on KROQ this morning, Armenian Genocide and all. Very good job. =)

Who cares if they use it as a commercial to boost their sales... the proceeds from the concert are going to Genocide recognition campaign and about 5 times a day when KROQ does the upcoming concerts ad they announce that it's for the 1915 Genocide of Armenians by the Turks. That's a good thing. Also, last year they had a concert on April 24 again and the whole concert venue was filled with Armenian flags and pamphlets about the Genocide etc etc etc... The more non-Armenians get exposed to this, the better it is for education about the genocide.....

Actually... there's no such thing as an Aryan. See, Aryans were beings in an old Indian (India) mythology which were "people of the sun." Hitler, being a huge mythology buff, took that term to represent his ideal race (all white, which by the way, we don't fit into) because to him the perfect people would indeed be "the people of the sun." Considering the "Aryans" began in India, the true Aryans would probably have dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes, unlike the people in Nazi Germany. It's a very misused term.

ALSO, being a berutahye isnt a race , its the armenian ethnicity, our race is caucasion.

Actually, being Berutsi or Baskahei or whatever is a nationality (cause it shows what nation you're from) and has nothing to do with enthicity at all. Their ethnicity stays the same: Armenian.

The name's Mike by the way, hope to post to here some more.

Smart guy. That said, I just bought Toxicity (yea I know, I'm a little late in the game). I really like some songs, but it's kinda hard to tell the difference between some of them.. 90% of it is the same nausiatingly repetitive noise... Best songs on the album are: Prison Song, Chop Suey, Toxicity, Innter Child, Bounce and Psycho.

I understand that a new SOAD album is due out this December (?) - think it was December that i heard...its supposed to be a big departure/maturation from their earlier style so they (the band) says...whatever that might mean (mellower?...hope not!)...anyway some orchestral arrangements and more Middle Eastern sounds as well...hear hear for the latter certainly...

agreed. I pretty much love everything on their first album. And there are some great ones on the second - but its not as original sounding from tune to tune in general (much of it blends togther and some is forgettable...still some great songs as well...besides aerials - toxicity, chop suey & pshyco are my faves...) - IMO...so hoping for even better with this next one...

HyeJinx1984
09-24-2004, 11:21 PM
Aerials and Atwa are my two favoties and both have sorta a mellower tone to them. I like SOAD when they sing instead of scream. I love how almost everysong has a guitar solo by Darren doing something that sounds very Armenian... makes listening to it a bit more tolerable for my parents, lol.

There's one shirt I saw that has a design on it that looks a bit Persian-ruggish; it doesn't look all that much like an Armenian carpet, but kinda. That's the closest I've seen to an Armenian reference.

SWEET! congrats you may now do the #1 thing that is armenian... COMPLAIN A LOT! [we are a lot like xxxish people for that reason]

- dress code (must wear the latest and greatest - i am serious)
- bathing - in the US, everyday, everywhere else twice a week (lol)
- the food is great everything is good, i am not sure about the testicles (i've never heard of that) but we do eat goat brain (my dad loves it, i think it looks too much like human brain - or what i think human brain would look like boiled, so i dont eat it) otherwise you are in for the best healthiest (most of the time) food in the world, you can buy a cook book from any bookstore.
- most armenians, and i mean like 95% of us are Arakelakan (i think this Apostolic? in english), this owuld be the most relax form of christianity... i love it, PLUS! we still practic pagen traditions like sacrfices of goats or lamd or chickens, and we still do other fun things for celebrating certain seasonal gods... like in the summer we have celebrations with the water (water god, etc...)
- what is your other half? it doesnt matter actually, if they know about yuo they will love you... YES you should contact them... HURRY!

But I did like the sample I heard of BYOB, Chop Suey and Question.
I bought them on Itunes. They're not bad actually. I feel an influx of energy whenever I hear that stuff. One thing though, these guys are no poets. Most of lyrics are very infantile and written by someone clearly high on something. The rythms though are quite catchy.

What does the verse below from Chop Suey mean?

System of a Down (sometimes referred to as S.O.A.D. or System) is a band from Los Angeles, California that formed in 1995. The band consists of Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards), John Dolmayan (drums), Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals) and Shavo Odadjian (bass), who are known for the outspoken social and political views found in their songs. What is "System of a Down" supposed to mean? It doesn't sound like proper English.

I interpreted it as a system that continuously causes the downfall of society. Think politics, institutions like schools, etc.

Serj said that artistic freedom should allow everyone to interpret it their own way.

Downside of SOAD: I'd like to hear them sing in Armenian. Just once. I know they all speak Armenian. So why not write just one song in Armenian? They had a chance to sing Ter Voghormia on Toxicity, I believe (the hidden track at the end with Arto Tuncboyaciyan), but they only hum along. Now imagine something like "Sugar" in Armenian. "Shakar". Why not?

I don't know how I feel about them. They are energetic on stage, I like the music, Serj has a nice voice, but, politically, I can't agree with them, & if they're druggies, that's not cool, either. I want them to be better representations, but, like Cher & Dr. Kavorkian -- they're American who just happen to be Armenian in blood. (And I know one or two of them were born IN Armenia, but, they were raised here & they're all citizens and influenced by here, are they not?) I think, and I could be wrong, they were influenced by the state of California and like all Americans, just want money. That is why I asked before (not knowing if anybody from Armenia is actually on this forum or if some of you have friends or family you talk to there), how are they perceived over IN Armenia? Are the Armenians actually PROUD that THESE men are famous and doing good for their country or do they regard them as Americans?

Actually, two were born in Lebanon. The singer and the drummer.

One was born in Armenia. The guy with the shaved head and narrow-long beard.

The other one that wears women clothing and is really messed up with drugs is born in the US.

True that they are American citizens and influenced, but I was born here and influenced as well, doesn't mean I do drugs.

They all do drugs, this is typical.

But seriously, the only people they really taught the story of the genocide are those rocker, goth, and so-called anarchist type people. I don't find them very useful, rather embarrassing.

I wish there were more Armenian actor-like celebrities that would help in a more classy manner.

:D Firstly, I thank you for refering to them by their descriptions & not their names as I only know the names of the two born in Lebanon (and the vocalist being vegetarian -- NO KHEMA!!! That's just WRONG!!). Isn't Shavo the one with red hair & green eyes (at least he looks that way in the pics). And the one who wears the Egyptian eye make-up. Does he LOOK Armenian? He jsut doesn't look Armenian to me. He's involved in the Occult (or, "fascinated" by it, I have read...minus the spelling error if there is one).

No, the one that wears weird eye shadow and makup is Daron. Shavo (long beard) is the bassit I believe.

In my opinion, I think they act more American than Armenian. They just happen to be Armenian who promote the Armenian Genocide.

Although I am also interested to find out how they are perceived in Armenia. Anyone know? Anyone from Armenia here?

Also, I am not saying these things to make Armenians dislike them. It's okay to like them and their music, I just find them not the best for promoting Armenian issues. Also they aren't good role models for young Armenians.

Edit: I didn't mean they promote the Armenian Genocide (that sounded bad), I meant they try to raise awareness.

They are confirmed drug addicts?

A Dutch music journalist once visited Mr. Serj and interviewed him at his home. Midway the interview, the journalist said that he had lost count of the number of hits Serj had taken from his bong.

When offered a joint before a concert in the Netherlands, Serj is said to have said: "There's tobacco in it. That won't do for me." Or words to that effect.

That same evening, he was wobbly on stage and on more than two occasions yelled through his microphone: "I'm too goddamn stoned!"

The Dutch super-joint apparently had more effect on him than he could have dreamed of.

Upon confronting my proud father with these facts, he said: "If he needs the drugs, then let him have them." When I reminded him that there were younger members of his family who enjoyed a smoke once in a while, he gave me a look and said: "That's different."

Last year, in October, I was sitting with my fiance at a resturant called "The Club", in Yerevan, when out of the blue Serj non-chalantly walk in with a few other people. No one really made a big deal about it except me...I was sort of shocked, so I shouted "Serj...I love you man" across the table. I think he was a little taken aback by my enthusiasm, as he ended up moving to another table out of veiw to mine. However, prior to moving, he came up to my table and chated for a few minutes. He was very gracious, in spite of my "school girl" moment. The only gripe I had was that he rejected my request to take a picture with him...he said "maybe later, outside"...I took the clue...oh well.
Anyway, I'm still a huge fan and I'm sure my path will cross with Serj again someday.

SOAD (System of a Down) is an Armenian band as far as I know, a few members of it may be non-Armenian, I don't have much information about them.

In Turkey it is said that this band made a banner on which "Turks and dogs are not allowed" is written hung up in a concert. Because of this, SOAD is hated so much. Yet, there is a great number of SOAD fans in Turkey. This fact makes fascists so furious and they regard Turkish SOAD fans as villain.

But then I heard that that banner was made by some fascist Armenians, not SOAD members. Even SOAD members attempted to leave the concert when they saw the banner, but they were convined to go on.

Now I want to ask you what the truth is about that incident. The concert was in 2005 as far as I remember.

I met Shavo a few years ago. My friend dragged me to Ozzfest and I didn't protest because the ticket was no expense, although many of the bands featured were mall-metal weaksauce.
Nevertheless SOAD put on a memorable show, and I had never been a fanatic but was always at least intrigued by them (mixed overall feelings--some of their albums were solid--others not so much).
Anyhow...a few hours after their set was finished, my boyfriend at the time and myself were in a long line waiting to get some lemonade (all beverages were $5! wtf).

I remember protesting, "this sh*t better have THC in it if I'm paying five dollars to drink it" and a tall/thin/bald/goatee'd guy in front of us in line turns around, laughs and replies with "I hear that!" I then realized it was the bassist I had seen onstage a few hours previous, mainly identifiable by the long, braided goatee and unusual height (I would say around 6'5").
I wasn't quite starstruck, but tickled that I shared a spontaneous b*tchfest over lemonade with System's bassist...who was in fact, pretty attractive in my book :)
