Not because I'm armenian (well, maybe) but I find that Khachaturian is amaaaazing. Ever heard Lezginka, or the Waltz in Masquerade, or the Violin concerto? aaaah yes.
Besides that, I like Sarasate, Tchaikovsky, and many of the Spanish stuff, like Bolero and all.
Vivaldi has some good ones too, but I don't like the kind of classic that is too reminiscent of a King's court.
Bach, honestly, scares me a little...:)

It's the best, babe, and you know it.
All of those you mentioned are Baroque composers. The Baroque period is my absolute favorite. I played a little Vivaldi when I studied violin. You play cello right?

I'm pretty sure you've only listened to his "common" pieces.
sort of like people who listen to "saint anger" and decide they hate metallica.
try listening to his cello suites.
I'm pretty sure you've heard one or two of em in commercials and stuff. it's very influential music.

Alright, I'll listen to the cello pieces, if you bring your cello to Montreal and play them ;)
Honestly though, I'm gonna download a few right now, any suggestions?
btw, I wanna restart playing the violin now ...:(
If anyone wants to send me a Christmas gift, a violin will suffice. :)

I absolutely adore Bach.
Bach, J.S. - Cello Suite No. 1 Mvt 1 by Yo-Yo Ma is amazing and so is Pachelbel - Cannon In D Major. Classical music is still the most inspirational and most complex kind of music, next in line is jazz (but that is just my opinion).

I adore classical.
I was very much immersed in this type of atmosphere at my music school in Armenia when I used to play the piano (not anymore :().
Have any of you guys heard Mozart's "Fantasy"? It's absolutely breathtaking.
I don't really have any favorites...I love them all.

well.. they're called Bach's cello suites for the unaccompanied cello.
so basically it's pure cello
doesn't appeal to lots of people
but they're beyond music to me.
all 6 suites come in 2 CDs...
the one that's most "commercialized" per say is the first suite's first movement; Prelude.
You're probably gonna listen to it and be like... ooooh so thats what you're talkin about.
my personal fav is #11 on CD #1 ..I apologize for I don't recall the suite and movement numbers.
they're just names anyway.
:D my memory's been pretty bad lately.
but you should really give them a try...
and if you have the choice of performer.
Mstislav Rostropovich would be my first!

I'm listening to Beethoven's moonlight sonata - 3rd movement (Piano Sonata 14 Op.27?) I admit to being not very knowledgeable about classical music, at first I thought the 3rd movement would be a different sounding version of moonlight sonata, sort of akin to a remix (retarded) I do enjoy it very much though. I like Rachmaninov also. Also Mozart's Requiem is haunting and powerful.

First Classical cannot suck, CLASSICAL is forever thats why is classical.
Second every peroid had its genius composers!
Baroque: All Bach pieces, Albinoni "Adagio" thats the most touching musical piece ever.
All Bethoven, all Mozart, Tchaykofski,
and of course the new composers of 20th century: Prokofiev "Romeo & Juliet" that piece is like superiority!!!!!
I dont just love classic music, but I breath with it!!!!!
(one of my favorites Medhelson, Concert for violion)....................

Indeed. I remember witnessing the Rachmaninov competition at the museum I used to work, pianists from all around the world competed to win a piano.
As far as the movie, I hoped they could have gotten a better actor to play Amadeus, but it was nonetheless good.
And I can't forget Tchaikovsky.

Well, how to tell how much it is great to have a person in your family that is playing a beautiful sounding instrument, a piano!
My sister is a pianist and I kind of enjoy her practicing slow beat and slow tempo Beethovens The Tempest
Anyway! It's the best :)

classical music is timeless, its in our bones, in every fiber of our being, its in nature, its the universe.
classical music is what i grew up on, my father is a professional violinist, maker, repairer, restorer and seller of violins, violas, bones and cellos.
if any of you live in the los angeles area, you might know of Hans Weisshharr. I love that shop :) He would take me with him when i was a wee little girl and i would spend my day with him, watching him work with the beautiful instruments, twas exciting and very educational.
I myself am a musician, I am an opera singer. The violin was never me. ( my father tried to teach me how to play it as a little girl) But i found that opera was what i loved most. Its as if you sing from your soul, to the souls of others....luminating them with beautiful music all over.
i love watching the expression of others when i give them something special to feel with my music, its undescribable.
i love bach, verdi, vivaldimozart, chopan, handel, beethoven.Basically dramatic, pieces that drive ones insides to burst with such emotion and feeling that you dont know how to control it, and it causes you to cry from its sheer beauty.
i love the romance period, and the baroque period a great deal.
i adore Bach's cello suites a great deal, they are very powerful.... The cello is my favorite out of all instruments, and also the contrabass, those instruments vibrate in your center ( soul) its an amazing feeling, like it comes from deep inside you. A haunting sound... :)
and mozarts requiem makes me cry, when they are barrying him... it makes the tears flow out like a river.

this might sound kinda pathetic, but I have never been able to like classical music. maybe I havn't listened to the real/emotional stuff. I guess I really like Gershwin's prelude 1 (sounds mysteriouly armenian like  ) but I don't know if that counts as classical music. I'm more into rock at the moment (zeppelin, sabbath, alice in chains, smashing pumpkins, etc.) if you have any suggestions on what classical music to listen to let me know, I'd be glad to listen (since I'm kinda embarassed at the moment about not liking classical music)

Why would it sound pathetic, that's your opinion. Who cares if everyone so far said they like classical music. If you don't like it you don't have to say "this might sound pathetic" thinking others might dissaprove. If they don't approve, who gives a xxxx :D .

lets see...
I don't know if I qualify as a classical music liking adviser :D , but lemme see here. if you're that much into rock, may be you should try this:
getting used to the sound of classical instruments, as opposed to listening to a brand new style of music, with brand new instrumental sounds.
how can you do that?
try finding something like APOCALYPTICA PLAYS METALLICA.
basically the "band"s name is apocalyptica, and they're four cellists playing Metallica masterpieces in this particular album.
They just give a whole new meaning to
Enter Sandman and master of puppets and the unforgiven and...(no lyrics of course)
so far whoever's listened to it in my car has ended up buying the cd.:D
or you could do the opposite.
listen to Vanessa Mae. she plays classical music on the electrical violin. it's crazy stuff . not too much of a strange music for a rock listener.
lemme know how this goes... ;)

I've actually heard the entire album or apocalyptica playing metallica, it's a nice concept, but seems a little bit dry and very choppy. I wish they had a constant bass behind it to hold the music together.

i was in show choirs for over 6 years, throughout junior high and high school. It was more of a pop based music style. We would sing and dance, sort of a broadway type of thing.
my parents saw how much i appreciated it, and they wanted me to get into something more classy and suiting for me, so my dad introduced me to his friend, a internationally famous opera singer, Ellada Chakoyan. Ive been training with her for the past 3 years now .

Gots to love me some connections. Lucky.
My story's similar. Same here with the show choir stuff, we did musicals, Guys and Dolls (I loved it). I was a hardcore member of our choir department in high school...didn't really realize that singing is my thing until later on in middle school. I'd ask you to introduce me, haha, although I haven't sang for a year or two...might be a little rusty. Vay amacheci. :D

I love classical and I'm always surrounded by it. My parents listen to it at home, work, in the car, it's on when they get ready for work early in the morning, not to mention the endless piano recitals.
When I was a baby, my mom put on some Vivaldi to comfort me and I started sobbing because it was so emotionally moving. Some things never change. I still cry when I listen to the Four Seasons.
