Thai police told the BBC the 72-year-old was found naked by a hotel maid in a wardrobe with a cord around his neck and other parts of his body.

The US star was in Thailand filming his latest film, Stretch, according to his personal manager Chuck Binder.

Mr Binder said the news was "shocking", adding: "He was full of life, always wanting to work... a great person."

Police said the actor's body was found in a suite at the 5-star Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel.

A US embassy official confirmed the actor's death, but added that the cause of death had not yet been established.

However, Thai newspaper The Nation reported that police believe the actor took his own life, and preliminary investigations found that he hanged himself.

Carradine was part of an acting dynasty which included his father, John Carradine, and brothers Bruce, Keith and Robert.

The star was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine in the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, which spawned sequels in the '80s and '90s.

The character became one of the most iconic roles in US TV and earned Carradine both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

While his film career saw him working with directors including Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman, the cult actor was considered something of a B-movie legend.

In 2003, after years in the straight-to-video market, Carradine found a new audience thanks to his role in the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill.

He was most recently seen on the big screen as a Chinese mobster in Crank: High Voltage, opposite British actor Jason Statham.

Carradine was an accomplished composer, musician, musical performer and songwriter. According to his official website, he was also a sculptor and a painter.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Bierman, and three children including actresses Calista and Kansas.

It's a little tight around the lats and the pecs but aside from that, a nice fit

"Carradine was married five times and had two daughters, Calista Miranda and Kansas. Each of his first four marriages ended in divorce. On December 26, 2004, he married Annie at the seaside Malibu home of his friend, Michael Madsen. The ceremony was performed by his attorney and his wife's longtime friend, Vicki Roberts. The marriage lasted until Carradine died."

Sad, he married 5 times and still died alone :(

Carradine's cause of death remains unclear: Thai police

Thai police said Friday they have completed an autopsy on American actor David Carradine, but results won't be ready for at least three weeks because the cause of death remains unclear.

Carradine, best known as the star of 1970s TV series Kung Fu as well as Quentin Tarantino's pair of Kill Bill films, was found dead in his Bangkok hotel room on Thursday morning. A maid at Bangkok's Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel discovered the 72-year-old actor's body hanging in the closet of his room.

Police initially said they suspected suicide.

However, on Friday, Lt.-Gen. Worapong Chewprecha told reporters that Carradine was discovered nude, with ropes around parts of his body.

"It is unclear whether he committed suicide or not, or he died of suffocation or heart failure," he said.

Death speculation
Police continue to say there is no evidence there was anyone else in the room at the time of Carradine's death.

There is speculation that Carradine died of autoerotic asphyxiation, a life-threatening means to heighten sexual arousal by robbing the brain of oxygen.

A member of the actor's management team rejected the theory that the actor committed suicide and said he had been in good spirits when he left for Bangkok on May 29 to film a new movie entitled Stretch.

"All we can say is, we know David would never have committed suicide," Tiffany Smith of Binder & Associates, which managed Carradine's career, told The Associated Press from Beverly Hills, Calif.

"We're just waiting for them to finish the investigation and find out what really happened. He really appreciated everything life has to give ... and that's not something David would ever do to himself."

Carradines showbiz family
Raised in Hollywood, Carradine was a member of a show business family. His father was character actor John Carradine, and his brothers include actors Keith Carradine, also a singer, Robert Carradine and Michael Bowen.

David Carradine, who was married five times, also has two daughters, Calista Miranda and Kansas, both actors.

Though he started his career on the New York stage, he eventually made the switch to television and movies in the mid-1960s, working with such acclaimed filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman, Roger Corman and Robert Altman.
