For anybody who enjoys the sound of the duduk, Djivan Gasparyan's albums are a must.
He might just be the world's most famous Armenian artist. He's on the soundtrack of "Gladiator", Denzel Washington's "The Siege" and a few other movies. He's collaborated with Michael Brook, Turkish musician Erkan Oglur (he held a concert in Istambul earlier this year), guitarist Jesse Cook and French-Armenian musician Armen Chakmakian.

His works with Chakmakian and the one with Cook (Incantation) are amazing. And you should all definitely check out Armenian Lyric Melodies and Dances, by the Djivan Gasparyan trio.

I actually went to highschool with his grandson (also named Jivan, minus the D) and he was telling me about how his family and Hans Zimmer (composer on Gladiator) had become very close. Apparently Hans took a great deal of interest in the dadook.

I'm gonna sound like a bad Armo now, but what's the difference between a dadook and a flute? Is Dadook just the Armenian word for Flute or is actually a different instrument?

I think the major difference is the duduk is made from the wood of an apricot tree. Am I right?

Ah.. yes.. I knew that. I know what a DUDUK is me of.. I was wondering what a DADOOK was made of...

Kinda like how Que'ran means "Love for all gods children" but Koran means "Eternal servitude of a brainwashed mind"

I love translating stuff :)

The sound of the duduk is COMPLETEEELY different. It doesn't have that wussy flute thing going on. :D

And, you can't ever be famous off the flute. ;)

with ALL due respect, and more, for djivan gasparyan... because i know his duduk playing could do the same to those guys.. but if djivan heard one of joe farrell's flute solos, which im sure he has, his jaw would hit the floor....

Bulgarians also use DUDUK,they call it DIUDIUK(Bulgarian folk musical instrument).IT's made from ash-tree, cornet tree, sycamore or cherrytree. DIUDIUK and DUDUK the same musical instruments.

What about Andreas Vollenweider and his new album <Cosmopoly>? absolutely astonishing.Music for the soul.

His opinion about Givan:

*And you did have faith, undoubdtedly, at least from what we hear on the album. But now, please, could you sketch a little portrait of your most famous guests: starting from the great Djivan Gasparyan...

"Oh, the "old" Djivan: what an extraordinary musician! I had met him in person many years ago, at the times of his first "official" recording. He played "duduk" (the small Armenian flute made in cherry-wood briar) with an intensity that was spasmodic to say the least, and he managed to draw from it emotions at the pure state, sounds that are very near to the human voice: a total ecstasy, indeed! At the end of the concert I went to meet him in person, and there I discovered that the man was, if possible, even greater and more charming than the musician. A real miracle in flesh and bones!".

I'm trying to think of something to add to the conversation... but besides saying I know his grandson and having spelled Daduk wrong all these years I have nothing to add... EXCEPT A LIMRIC!!!!!!!

Oh, there once was a man by the name of Jivan,
He was an Armenian, but born in Iran.

Oh how he wished to be able to play that daduk,
as well as that other Jivan who was busy reading a book.

So he interupted Jivan and said "Yo fo', whas' happenin' Dawg?"
looking up from his book, Jivan responded "Oh nothing, just sitting beside this log"

The younger Jivan look about, then raised a brow "A log?"
The older rolled his eyes and shrugged, whispering "It's the only thing that rhymes with 'Dawg'"

Damn... that wasn't even funny. Better judgement is telling me to delete that bull**** limric of mine. But I rarely listen to better judgement...

Ahem, you aparently did not follow my very sophistactingly complex storyline very well... you see there were two Jivans, the original and one who wanted to learn the daduk who was from Iran. It's a very stupid story though, so don't bother yourself with it.

I love how we as a people can't decide on whether the name is Hosep, Hovsep or Ovsep (Seen all three spellings) but we have a definate spelling of the word Duduk. Well I will be rebelous and just say it's spelled Dudbirewok with a silent B, I, R, E, and W....... so there! *sticks out tongue*

Actually, I believe they are all correct in a sense. "Hosep" is probably an older pronounciation. The name is the translation of "Joseph" which has no "V".

Some kid a my school. Was gonna scan a picture out of the year book and type "this guy" but decided it's kinda immoral to put someone elses picture up on the web to make fun of them with out even telling them about it... see what a nice guy I am? That and my face is on my avatar so if he found out he'd probably kick my ass.

Wow, I didn't notice. Thanks for the headsup.

UPDATE: I just searched google for "the passion" and "duduk"... turns out there were two people playing the duduk on the soundtrack, one was Levon Minnassian and the other was Chris Bleth... the second one surprised me a bit cause I didn't think non-Armenians bothered learning that insturment.
