I was born and raised here in California but have travelled to various other parts of the country and the world and not everyone that I've encountered were familiar with Armenians and who we are. With that being the case,I'm wondering what other ethnicity have some of you other Armenians been mistaken as? Personally,I've been confused most often as being Italian,Greek or Persian.

I get French ALOT, Spanish, Portugues, once i got Italian, and on really bad days, bad hair days i get Arab. But its mostly French. And people also think i have a French accent, i dont have an Armenian accent thats for sure, but it aint French either.

Even though my skin is white and I have mostly European features, my eyes look Middle Eastern. I had a friend tell me, 'You can tell by your eyes you're something; I just couldn't tell what.'
Another friend who I've known for 16 years fairly recently said, "You're Romanian, right?" *sigh* No, but, close.

Yeah, I've been called Russian too by people who knew I spoke the language. ehhh.
Other than that people here still come up to me a try to speak Spanish. I say "Ala verga cavron, yo soy Armeniano, no pinche Mexicano". Also, I often get confused for an Italian/Greek and once for a Persian.
P.S. I was kidding about what I reply, I don't actively look for fights.

Now that you mention that, I do remember this "Hispanic" woman, years ago comming up to me and my brother, and started speking spanish at us. We just stared bewildered at her than at each other. I kept saying "We don't speak Spanish". "I don't understand." "No comprende". She just kept babling.
Then, my brother who interned in California recently, said people always came up to speak Spanish to him. It didn't help him any that he grew himself a his black beard, and having spent the whole summer out there he got a decent tan as well.
Also, I often get confused for an Italian/Greek and once for a Persian.

This Romanian thing is common I guess. It seems Americans subscribe to the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle when it comes to georgraphy. When I got here, I heard there was an Armenian family which owned a gas station. I enthusiastically enter the station wistling one after another Armenian song in hopes of playing a trick on the owners. Nothing. Turns out they're Romanian. *sigh*.
I've been called everything but Armenian. :( I've been mistaken for Greek, German, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Russian & Iranian.

I dont know. I know its different because i can tell the rest of my family has this kind of accent that is different from mine. I guess because i left Armenia when i was 6 and started talking a different langauge it kind of mixed it up a bit. I dont know i would say it sounds kind of French, i dont care, but girls love it. :naughty:

Well, I think, "Armenian" is just so not in the vocabulary of the average American that they hear the three sylables and the "-nian" suffix that in their brain, they automatically switch to something they know, a more well known country, Romania/n. I think that's what happened concerning my one friend.

Certainly.. my mother is American born .. her father is from Lebanon. Her mother is french/english/big ol' euro mix but converted to Maronite when her parents married. I say "mainly" because even though she was mix euro/lebanese, she and the family recognized her father's side. When she married my father she then started attending Armenian Orthodox church rather than Maronite. My siblings and I were baptized and grew up in Armenian Church, we recognized my father's religion rather than my mother's maronite catholic side.. kind of complicated.

In Brazil, ppl thought I was American (they have this assumption that everyone here is tall and white) and in London I was told by a lot of ppl I look Polish (have no clue what they look like).
No one ever guessed I was Armenian...everytime I say my dad is Armenian they look at me surprised as if they knew how an Armenian look like (I had this guy who was hitting on me at the time, ask me in what part of Africa Armenia was located...AFRICA...tsk tsk...I obviously didn't even give him my phone number...)

Aren’t Chechens more easily distinguishable if they are the targets? (However it does not justify anything)
Does the average Russian care about Armenians being killed?
I have met Russians and I’ve never had the impression that they dislike us. How do you know the ethnic makeup of that school? The Ossetia region is something like 25% Russian so there's a good chance that there were some Russians in that school.

I am a Russian who has 1/4 Armenian blood, and who is living in Turkey for the time being!
Unfortunately racism is growing in Russia day by day. Those in Russia, who attack people with darker skin, don't care whether you are Armenian or Azeri or someone else. The only improtant factor for them is that you look like "Russian" or not...
By the way, about the question "who is Russian", I want to say that if a person feels himself Russian, then he is a Russian. The same is also applicable to other nationalities. There are thousands of people in Turkey who are ethnically Armenian, but they feel themselves Turkish, because they are muslim and they associate themselves with this nationality.
