Protestors Demand Media Use “Correct” Karabakh Maps

    [ 24 December 2008 | 13:35 ] Karabakh, politics |

Early this morning members of Armenia’s internet community, bloggers and members of youth NGO’s gathered in front of the Geodesic and Cartography Institute in Yerevan and staged a protest of sorts regarding the maps of the Karabakh that are still being published by the institute. The protesters started to hand out maps which portray the present borders of the Republic of Karabakh as those of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region in Soviet Azerbaijan. That is to say, maps used by the mass media in Armenia still do not represent the RMK as including the liberated territories. This fact, in the view of those who staged the protest, is not only a slap in the face to those who fought and died in the Karabakh war of liberation but also a major public relations error.

The protest was staged in support of the December 9th initiative of the youth in Artsakh regarding the incorrect representation of their republic. “We wish to stand alongside our friends in Artsakh. We also want to pay respect to the memory of those who perished on those territories and to pay respect to those presently living there,” declared Tigran Kocharyan, one of the organizers of the event and Vice-President of the “Yerevan Experts Club” The organizers had sent letters to all media outlets, pointing out their concerns and correct maps and DVD’s were personally handed to the most influential media outlets who still use the old Karabakh maps during their broadcasts, especially during the weather report. These include “Shant” and “H2″ TV stations and those that use “Meteo-TV” maps.

“Hetq” staffers also joined one of the groups handed out the maps and went to the headquarters of “Shant TV” where they met with station management who posed a number of lengthy questions to the young protestors, including what they expected by handing out the new maps and DVD’s. Management finally accepted the items and promised to relay the matter to station directors. Upon exiting, the participants bumped into “Shant TV” anchor Nver Mnatsakanyan who promised to personally get involved in resolving the error.

Alex Pisman: "Azerbaijan must not lose in information war with Armenia"

      27 December 2008 [13:46] - Today.Az

The book of Azerbaijani professor Rovshan Mustafayev "March of Death", disсlosing the new facts about the crimes of Armenians against xxxs was discussed in Israel, said Israeli historian, socialogical scientist and journalist, professor Alex Pisman, who wrote a reference to this book.

Asked whether the facts, introduced in this book, can be used effectively in the information war against Armenians, who attempt to blacken Azerbaijan's image, he said he was surprised with many facts.

"I was glad to take part in the ceremony of awarding the diploma of the International Fund Eurasia-Press to this book in Baku. This is another chance to voice the truth about tolerance of Azerbaijani people.

"I would say even more, and I want the readers of your wonderful website to read it. I want them to realize that today a word of truth, based on facts, is more important than thousands of patriotic words", said Pisman.

He stressed the need to continue working with literature, documental sources, the need to get information from people who were, for example, deported from Armenia in the late 1980.

"When people go, their memory goes with them. We must pay attention to each person, who remembers and can speak honestly, as it is important to inform the whole world. Those, who oppose Azerbaijan in this information war, do like this. Azerbaijan must not lose in this war, as if you lose at this field you will lose at other fields too and we, the diaspora from Azerbaijan, try to retain all good things, that we know, that we remember and will continue to remember", concluded Pisman.

Re: Armenia and the information war

Day.Az releases statement about resentment of several public organizations of Armenia
        27 December 2008 [11:58] - Today.Az

Several public organizations of Armenia appealed to the leading television companies of the country with the demand to include the Karabakh province of Azerbaijan not to the borders of the former NKAO, but along with other seven occupied regions of Azerbaijan.

The statement fixes that on December 9 the youth organizations, illegally functioning in this area of Azerbaijan, appealed with an open letter to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan with a demand to replace the map of NKAO, "which has long become a history" with the map of "Nagorno Karabakh Republic". The authors of the appeal voiced resentment by the fact that Day.Az uses the term of "Western Azerbaijan" about some regions of Armenia.

In this connection, Day.Az has to announce that it partially agrees with the leaders of the youth organizations of the occupied Nagorno Karabakh, which were not registered in the Azerbaijan's Justice Ministry in the duly manner, in the sense that NKAO has really sank into oblivion together with its quite provisional borders, which artificially divided the historically single Karabakh into upper and lower parts. Yet, there is no "Nagorno Karabakh Republic" and especially "its map". The wish to see what is not real indeed is called "an illusion" and the fact that Armenia sees what the entire world does not see proves the definite talent of the Armenian nation in the sense of transcendental meditation.

As for the term "Western Azerbaijan", Day.Az states that it will stop using this term, as soon as the government of Armenia makes a statement about recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within the borders of former Azerbaijan SSR (including Nagorno Karabakh, Kerki village of Nakhchivan, Ashaghy and Yukhari Askipara, Gushchu Ayrim, Barkhudarli villages of Gazakh), prohibit te use of the term "Western Armenia" about the eastern provinces of Turkey and removes the image of Aghri-Dagh mountain, which is on the territory of a different country from the state anthem. Then it will be possible to speak about terminology.

Re: Armenia and the information war

The last paragraph really summerizes well the childish mentality of the azeris. I can't wait to see major civil unrest take place all throughout azerbaijan as a result of the low oil prices and the economic crisis.
For the first time in more than 600 years, Armenia is free and independent, and we are therefore obligated
to place our national interests ahead of our personal gains or aspirations.

Azerbaijani Diaspora wins information war against Armenia: Chairman of State Committee

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 30 /corr. Trend News J.Babayeva / The Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Diaspora of Azerbaijan, Nazim Ibrahimov, considers that the Azerbaijan diasporas win the information war against Armenia.

“All international organizations recognize Armenia as aggressor country and accept Azerbaijan as the victim side. The entire world recognizes realities of Khojali tragedy,” Ibrahimov briefed the media on Dec. 30.

The Head of the State Committee does not agree with the opinions that the Azerbaijan diasporas lag behind others. “They all began to function for many years earlier than the Azerbaijan diasporas, which could reach positive results within a short period. Friendly relations were established between the Azerbaijan and xxxish diasporas, since xxxish lobby recognizes the force of the diasporas of Azerbaijan,” said the chairman of State Committee.

Armenian diasporas analyze each step of Azerbaijani diasporas and this testifies the authority of our organizations, he said. “The diasporas are supported by a strong state and care of the wise President,” said Ibragimov.

The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasus began in 1988 due to territorial claims by Armenia against Azerbaijan. Armenia has occupied 20% of the Azerbaijani land including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and its seven surrounding Districts. Since 1992, these territories have been under the occupation of the Armenian Forces. In 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement at which time the active hostilities ended. The Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group ( Russia, France and USA) are currently holding peaceful negotiations.

On the night of 25 to 26 February 1992 the Azerbaijani settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh, Khojali, was occupied by Armenian separatists, with active participation of military personnel and army tanks of the 366th regiment of the Russian army. In a matter of several hours, more than 600 unarmed Azerbaijani citizens, including 106 women and 83 children, were brutally killed. The annihilation of the peaceful people continued for several days during which time the Armenians executed and killed prisoners, committed violence against women and children, cut off the heads of Azerbaijani military prisoners and had them hung up. During this crime, 487 people, including 76 juveniles were physically disabled and 1,275 people were taken prisoner. Despite the release of most of the prisoners, the fate of 150 people is still unknown.

Exactly what I have been talking about for months now here. I posted a strategy and maps to use in an above post too http://forum.hyeclub.com/showpost.ph...3&postcount=39 and http://forum.hyeclub.com/showpost.ph...7&postcount=40. Please my fellow Armenians, whenever you see maps that do not mention Artsakh or show it as an enclave, boycott it and contact the person so they change it.

Karabakh Borders: De jure, de facto, de TV

In December of 2008 representatives of Karabakh’s youth organizations sent a letter to Armenian president Serjh Sargsyan asking him to use his influence to have “weather forecasts” on Armenian TV channels quit using maps in which Armenia and Karabakh are shown within the borders they had in 1988. On these maps Nagorno Karabakh is presented within the borders of former Autonomous Region of Nagorno Karabakh (ARNK, as a part of Azerbaijani SSR) and Lachin corridor (connecting Armenia and NKR) isn’t there at all.

For 20 years Karabakh has had no connection to Azerbaijan, has been building an independent – if unrecognized – statehood, establishing interstate relations with Armenia, meanwhile Armenia hasn’t decided yet whether or not to recognize Karabakh’s independence.

Despite the letter being actively circulated on the Internet, Armenian TV channels, however, did not pay much attention to it (except for Yerkir Media TV). Being unable to decide which map to use in their weather forecast programs and in order to avoid any complications on border issues they keep using the 1988 map as if the last 20 years have not existed at all.

Does the government have a unanimous standpoint and conception on the Karabakh issue settlement? On December 3, Heritage faction deputy Larisa Alaverdyan raised the issue in the parliament of Armenia, to which Prime-Minister Tigran Sargsyan responded by admitting that such a problem does exist. Alaverdyan pointed out that during weather forecast Armenian TV channels demonstrate a map on which there is no linking line between Armenia and Karabakh, and Karabakh is shown within the borders of former ARNK. Alaverdyan stated that it’s not simply a distortion of reality, but also a violation of NKR Constitution and legislation, according to which NKR sovereignty applies to its current administrative territory.

The letter by NKR youth organizations says that “the war crossed out artificial and unviable borders of ARNK forced upon the Armenian people”, and that “the NKR Constitution adopted as a result of the referendum held in 2006, consolidated sovereign borders of the Armenian land liberated at the cost of blood of the best sons of our nation”.

“The fact of ignoring one way or another -be it ideologically or in real politics- the victory of the Armenian nation and its results not only disregards the memory of fallen heroes, but also encourages a new armed aggression against the Armenian statehood,” says the letter.

A few days later a number of Armenian NGOs and individuals joined the statement of youth organizations by sending an open letter to the heads of Armenian mass media.

The authors of the letter state that 14 years after calling a truce a peculiar situation has formed: the objective reality of including those regions into NKR, which once were a part of Azerbaijani SSR, is not anyhow reflected in Armenian mass media, commercials or brochures. NKR is either absent from maps or is shown within the borders of former ARNK.

“Such maps are a violation of Article 142 of NKR Constitution according to which ‘until the integrity of the state territory of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh is restored and borders are precisely defined public authority is implemented on the territory which is de facto under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh’ ,” quotes the letter.

The letter further calls upon mass media not to avoid showing the acting real borders, actively cover life on the liberated lands and inform citizens of Armenia about the strategic role of those lands (the letter had 62 signatures).

The issue of maps has been important since the very beginning of the Karabakh conflict, and ever since Internet came along it has become urgent. Armenian websites demonstrate a surprising tolerance by posting maps where Karabakh is a part of Azerbaijan. On brochure maps produced by many tourism agencies printed in Armenia the borders of Karabakh do not match today’s reality.

Meanwhile, maps and catalogues produced abroad are more accurate, so much that Azerbaijan is putting up a struggle against them. Day.az site posted a list of travel SIM cards on which Karabakh is shown as a part of Armenia or as a separate country. Those are: GSM-Travel, SIMTRAVEL, Travel International SIM Card, produced by In Touch company, Smart cards (USA), travel SIM cards produced by telecommunication company Oneroam (Great Britain), GO-SIM™ cards, GLOBALSIM cards, produced by HBSGlobal and many others; the list was a full 5 pages long.

So the situation arises in which Azerbaijani channels in their daily weather forecast speak about Karabakh as their inseparable part, and Armenian channels, by default, confirm.

Um. How does a Armenian channel confirm by default Karabakh is Azeri when they are saying it was historically Armenian. That article is poorly written, the conclusion doesn't match what is discussed to be true in the article.

Armenian channels either show Armenia alone or Armenia + former NKAO. There is absolutely no reason for either of these considering Artsakh (including the "liberated territories") is indisputable Armenian territory. The first one totally leaves out Artsakh and the second relies on an outdated map. By leaving out Artsakh, you leave it within the fake republic.

No such "azeri" organization has any problems with maps and neither should we.

Israel suppresses Armenian Genocide recognition campaign in U.S.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Besides all possible support to anti-Armenian activities in the United States, a number of Israeli scientific organizations with the help of some Armenian individuals are penetrating in various research centers in the U.S. and Europe, an Armenian expert said.

“The main goal of such “scientists” is to disseminate a pseudo-theory that the Armenian ethnos is Semitic and is similar to the xxxish nation,” Eduard Abrahamyan, an expert of Mitq analytical center said in his “Israel’s policy in Caucasus: tasks and regional allies” article obtained by PanARMENIAN.Net.

“Spreading this propaganda throughout the United States, Israel tries to suppress the Armenian Genocide recognition campaign. Developing an opinion that Asia Minor is not the historical homeland of the Armenian people, Tel Aviv is eager to take control over the influential capital of the Armenian community through mass interfusion of the Armenian and xxxish Diasporas,” the article says.

“The Judaization project was worked out by Turkish and xxxish historians and psychologists in 1930ies with a purpose to suppress the Armenianhood with its memory of the 1915 events.

Pro-Turkish organizations and officials in Europe were pushing a theory of xxxish origin of Armenians.

The problem is that Armenian scientists do not realize the threat of this pseudo-theory, which is being persistently spread throughout the republic.

In other words, xxxish activists are fulfilling Turkey and Azerbaijan’s tasks in the republic,” the article says.
