Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

You have just identified yourself as a bit of an idiot.
Tumanyan was a poet, Tamanian was an architect and urban planner. They are two different people!

What is happening? Are the pavements subsiding or the buildings rising? Isn't there an underground car park that runs most of the way along North avenue?

Actually, Tamanyan had a great vision for what Yerevan could be like, but his vision also included quality in the construction of the various buildings, something that some of these developers have not respected by cutting corners and using cheap items to finish their various projects.
For the first time in more than 600 years, Armenia is free and independent, and we are therefore obligated
to place our national interests ahead of our personal gains or aspirations.

Re: Armenia: Future Projects and Developments

I've always wondered what construction in Armenia was like. I ws hoping that since the country is in an earthquake prone region that everything would be built up to par, especially earthquke codes, but now i fear they've been cutting corners on a lot of things.

I think Armenia suffers from "little man" syndrome, they feel like the world doesn't notice them so they're trying to very hard to make to make themselves stand out, but they're rushing everything so much that things aren't being done properly and it'll be a hinderance in the long run. Who cares if there's a new tall building if it starts to have foundation problems and gets cracks in the wall?

Also I'm all for flashy skyscrappers, but rather than trying to becom the Dubai of Causcasia, they should learn from cities like Paris and keep most of the new glass and metal buildings to certain districts rather than mixing it all in with historical buildings.

Also I understand that the budget for new buildings isn't infinite, but many of the new buildings look sort of drab b/c their exterior faces are concrete. I'd rather them lose a floor and have the exterior be granite.

And lastly they should try to move toward classical style buildings, like those of European capitals like Paris or Prauge, than Hong Kong or Dubai

Armenia does not suffer from anything.
                    Other Armenians create the suffering.

The answer is pure greed and corruption, which makes the most “educated“ person
blind to realities and consequences of their actions a bit further down the line.

From the pictures it appears the building has subsidence.
Basically it is sinking into the ground due to its weight. The ground is unable to hold the weight of the building.
It is not possible to predict when the subsidence will stabilize or carry on until it becomes unsafe and needs to be pulled down.
In the meantime it is a “worthless” building with an uncertain future.

This is common knowledge to architects and structural engineers.

It would have been possible to avoid this by having deeper and stronger foundations or simply put a limit
( by the authorities) to the number of floors allowed on the site having considered the ground structure.

At the end of the day the final shape and size of that building ( and the rest) was decided by
the responsible Architects, Yerevan municipality ( Architects and bureaucrats) and owners and financiers of the building.

I will leave to the intelligent reader as to the decisions process.

Re: Armenia: Future Projects and Developments

my point is that even if every detail was carefully planned, if things are rushed they'll never be done correctly.

And actually they are trying to get many projects done quickly, by 2014, b/c they expect near a million Armenians from the diaspora to make some sort of pilgrimage the following year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the genocide, and they want every thing to look nice enough to make a majority of those "pilgrims" to comeback every year.

And carefully planned or not, I still wonder if buildings are being built up to general standards for earthquake prone areas... just buliding a building with a solid foundation isn't enough
