    The "Western Armenia and the Hidden Armenians" panel will be on
    Saturday, October 24

    LOS ANGELES--The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA-WR)
    has confirmed the attendance of three highly-respected international
    experts on free speech, human rights, and minority rights, Aris Nalci,
    Baris Allen, and George Aghjayan, at the 2015 ANCA-WR Grassroots
    Conference. The guest speakers will join hundreds of attendees from
    around the world to participate in the "Western Armenia and Hidden
    Armenians" panel, which will take place on October 24at 9 a.m at
    the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. Matthew Karanian, Esq. author of
    the best-selling English language books Armenia and Karabakh: The
    Stone Guardian Travel Guide and Historic Armenia: 100 Years Later,
    will moderate the panel.

    With more than 7 million Armenians living outside of Armenia and
    Artsakh, in addition to the estimated 2 million forcibly Islamized or
    "Hidden Armenians" living in present-day Eastern Turkey as a result
    of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, the dynamic panel will engage audiences
    in identity politics and issues interfering with cultural preservation
    for Armenians everywhere. There will be a question and answer session
    at the end of the panel.

    Aris Nalci, an author and filmmaker noted for his coverage of
    Armenian and minority issues, as well as freedom of speech, will
    join geographical and demographic researcher of Western Armenia
    (present-day Eastern Turkey), George Aghjayan, and Kurdish human
    rights activist Baris Alen.

    Aris Nalci graduated from FerikУЖy Merametcian Primary Armenian School,
    Getronagan Armenian High School in Istanbul and the Yildiz Technical
    University, where he served on the Mechanical Engineering Faculty.

    Between 1997 and 2011, Nalci worked as a writer and editor for the
    Istanbul-Armenian newspaper, Agos. He has also written for the daily
    newspaper Birgun and Radikal, the weekly newspaper Beyoglu, and several
    Armenian and Turkish journals. He is currently a producer and editor
    at IMC TV in Turkey.

    In 2011, Nalci created the first TV show about minorities in Turkey
    called Gamurc (Bridge), which is still on air. He has also filmed
    documentaries on Armenian issues, minority rights, and free speech,
    including Avtobus (2012), 23-and-a-Half (2013), January Nineteen
    (2013), Grandma's Receipt (2013), and Turkish Presidents' Exam with
    Armenians (2014). In 2014, he co-wrote "1965-50 years after Armenian
    Genocide, 50 years before 100т~@Г with Serdar Korucu. Nalci also
    contributes weekly blogs to T24.com.tr.

    Baris Alen, born in Diyarbakir, Turkey, studied International Relations
    at Istanbul Dogus University. He received an M.A. of Global Studies at
    Lund University in Sweden and launched his professional career in the
    NGO sector, working for the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey in Ankara
    and the Federation of Southeast Anatolian Businessman Association in
    Diyarbakir. More recently, Alen worked for the Diyarbakir Metropolitan
    Municipality as the Mayor's Foreign Relations advisor until the 2014
    elections. Since then, he has been working for the International
    Humanitarian organization on the Syrian border to provide basic
    hygiene, food, and other essentials to refugees out of official camps.

    George Aghjayan graduated from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute
    with honors in 1988, acquiring his bachelor's of science degree in
    Actuarial Mathematics. He achieved his Fellowship in the Society of
    Actuaries in 1996. After a career in both insurance and structured
    finance, Aghjayan retired in 2014 to focus his efforts on Armenian
    related research and projects. His primary area of interest is the
    demographic and geography of Western Armenia, but he also researches
    hidden Armenians living there today.

    Aghjayan has also written and lectured on a wide array of topics,
    including Armenian genealogy and genocide denial. He has served
    on the Central Committee of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation,
    Eastern United States and the National Board of the Armenian National
    Committee of America.

    "Our featured panelists provide invaluable insight into the occupied
    ancestral homeland of Armenians. The panel will serve as a mini-course
    in issues faced by Armenians and non-Armenians living in modern
    Western Armenia," said ANCA-WR Grassroots committee co-chairman Ayk
    Dikijian, Esq.

    The moderator of the panel, Matthew Karanian, Esq. is a
    second-generation Armenian American lawyer who wrote the first
    self-published guidebook on Armenia. Karanian served as the Associate
    Dean of the American University of Armenia's law program and as the
    Director of the University' Legal Research Center. Karanian also
    founded the Armenian Law Review in 2003 with his students.

    Since 1995, Karanian has embarked on journeys to Eastern and Western
    Armenia, Artsakh, Javakhk, Ani, and Cilicia. His book, "Armenia and
    Karabakh" is based on over a dozen visits to Armenia. His writings
    about Armenia have been published in numerous periodicals in the
    United States and Canada, and his recent book "Historic Armenia: 100
    Years Later" is an impressive encyclopedia and pictorial record of
    the present-day status of Western Armenia, its monuments, churches,
    villages, and people.

      la question de l’identité est complexe. Elle peut être selon le genre, la classe sociale, le groupe ethnique, linguistique, religieux, ou tant d’autres choix encore. Souvent ces groupes peuvent s’entre couper, mais parfois non : les Parsis en Inde sont zoroastriens, les Arméniens sont chrétiens de l’Eglise arménienne (Eglise nationale) et les Juifs sont considérés parfois comme groupe à la fois ethnique et religieux. En contexte de centenaire du génocide des arméniens, de plus en plus de travaux sociologiques, anthropologiques ou historiques soulèvent une question nouvelle : celle des Arméniens musulmans.

      Voici notre première partie consacrée à l’histoire de cette communauté oubliée.

      Histoire des rapports entre arméniens et Islam
      Les Arméniens sont le premier peuple à se convertir au christianisme en tant que royaume, en 301 (la date réelle est probablement un peu plus tard). L’Eglise arménienne a également la particularité d’être une Eglise nationale, appelée orthodoxe orientale : elle n’était pas soumise au patriarcat de Constantinople (ni à celui de Moscou par la suite) et était donc indépendante. Son dogme religieux est proche de celui de Coptes d’Egypte, des Syriaques orthodoxes et des Ethiopiens, ces communautés religieuses étant différentes de celles des Grecs, des Russes, des Bulgares, des Serbes ou des Géorgiens parmi les Orthodoxes (et donc différent des Catholiques et des Protestants).

      Les Arméniens ont connu différents royaumes mais dès le Vème siècle, ils sont intégrés à l’empire Perse. Vont se succéder différents occupants : Arabes, Seldjoukides, Mongols, Ottomans, Perses et Russes. Ce que l’on peut donc noter, c’est que dès l’avènement de l’Islam et la conquête qui s’en suit, les Arméniens vont être sous domination musulmane de façon quasi complète jusqu’au 20ème siècle avec trois exceptions majeures : le Royaume Arménien de Cilicie indépendant du 11ème au 14ème siècle, la domination Mongole (dont le Royaume de Cilicie sera allié), et la moitié de « l’Arménie » au 19ème siècle passe de la domination Perse à la domination Russe au Sud-Caucase (l’autre moitié étant dans l’empire ottoman).

      Dès l’arrivée musulmane, des Arméniens se convertissent à l’Islam, de façon forcée ou volontaire. Pour ne prendre que quelques exemples, on peut noter les vizirs du Califat fatimide Badr Al-Jamali et son fils Al Afdhal Shahanshah (à l’époque de la première croisade) sont arméniens. Des conversions forcées ont lieu dans l’empire ottoman, notamment dans le corps des Janissaires : la puissante armée de l’empire est composée d’enfants chrétiens enlevés à leurs familles et convertis dès leur plus jeune âge. Mais à cette époque, les identités ne sont pas ethniques, seulement religieuses, et les Arméniens musulmans sont très vite assimilés la communauté dominante : arabe, perse, kurde, ou turque. C’est pourquoi, les Arméniens jusqu’à nos jours sont en immense majorité chrétienne arménienne, et les minorités religieuses sont les Arméniens catholiques ou protestants.

      Un point mérite d’être relevé sur les relations entre chrétiens arméniens et musulmans azéris dans le sud-Caucase. Les territoires qui composent l’Azerbaïdjan et l’Arménie actuels étaient à l’époque particulièrement mixtes, sans aucune homogénéité de populations. Erevan comptait plus de mosquées que d’Eglises, tandis que Bakou était à majorité arménienne. Dès 1905, de nombreux nettoyages ethniques dans les deux camps ont lieu jusqu’à l’arrivée de Lénine puis Staline qui gèle les conflits de manière arbitraire. Il faut attendre la fin de l’ère soviétique, les débuts du conflit du Karabagh pour que les Etats s’homogénéisent totalement, avec les pogroms de Sumgayt, Ganja et Bakou, suivi de la fuite de 300 000 à 400 000 Arméniens d’Azerbaïdjan, tandis que les rares familles azéries restées en Arménie quittent le pays ou s’assimilent totalement (il existe cependant d’autres minorités dans chacun des deux pays). Pour illustrer la mixité du territoire, il est amusant de noter que le seul président au monde a être né en Arménie serait Heydar Aliyev, ancien président d’Azerbaïdjan, tandis que les trois présidents arméniens sont nés en Syrie ou dans le Haut Karabagh, à l’époque en RSS d’Azerbaïdjan.

      La conversion des Arméniens pendant le génocide
      De nombreux Arméniens de l’empire ottoman ont été contraints de se convertir pendant le génocide de 1915. Il faudrait d’ailleurs remonter aux débuts de la question arménienne et aux massacres de 1894-1896 pour avoir une vue plus globale sur le sujet. Sur les massacres du Sultan Abdül Hamid II des années 1890, on estime que 100 000 Arméniens sont convertis de force. Pendant le génocide, les femmes sont souvent converties, ainsi que les enfants orphelins, qui sont ensuite turquifiés ou kurdifiés.

      Mais il est important de noter que, contrairement aux massacres précédents, pendant le génocide les conversions n’ont pas été toujours forcées. Au contraire, il s’agissait d’un moyen de survie pour les Arméniens. Il est aussi intéressant de noter que les conversions étaient réglementées par le pouvoir central de l’empire ottoman : parfois elles étaient tout simplement interdites, souvent il était plus facile pour une femme de se convertir que pour un homme, y compris chez les enfants. Il arrivait que des Arméniens se convertissent mais soient tout de même tués, tandis que d’autres étaient toujours appelés gavour (infidèle) après leurs conversions. Enfin certains dirigeants locaux refusèrent d’appliquer les ordres lorsqu’il s’agissait de tuer les convertis ou de refuser les conversions. La question des conversions pendant le génocide est donc particulièrement complexe.

      Le problème pour comprendre ce phénomène est le manque de travaux sur le sujet. Du côté arménien, ces convertis sont assimilés et sont donc des Turcs ou des Kurdes. Les Arméniens convertis ne sont considérés ni comme victime, ni comme survivant du génocide, ils ont pour ainsi dire « disparu » dans l’historiographie du génocide des arméniens. Du point de vu turc, les Arméniens convertis ne sont pas nécessairement considérés comme des Turcs non plus. Certains musulmans de Turquie sont ainsi appelés « Ermeni » (« Arménien ») en fonction de leur ascendance arménienne, ce qui était considéré comme une insulte pendant longtemps. On a donc réellement à faire à une communauté oubliée et non étudiée sociologiquement et historiquement jusqu’à très récemment.

En contexte de centenaire du génocide des arméniens, de plus en plus de travaux sociologiques, anthropologiques ou historiques soulèvent une question nouvelle : celle des Arméniens musulmans.

      Après un premier volet historique (à retrouver ici), voici notre seconde partie consacrée à l’actualité de cette communauté oubliée.

      Être Arménien et musulman aujourd’hui
      Un ouvrage va couvrir ce sujet : « Le livre de ma grand-mère » de Fethiye Çetin. Cette auteure raconte comment elle découvre à l’âge adulte qu’elle est d’origine arménienne. Sa grand-mère, avant de mourir, rompt le silence de toute une vie et lui décrit ce qu’elle a vécu depuis l’époque du génocide. Après la publication du livre, de nombreux Turcs ou Kurdes commencent à revendiquer également un grand parent arménien. En ce sens, le livre de Fethiye Çetin est majeur car il a ouvert la voie à cette communauté.

      Dès lors, une question se pose : combien de personnes sont concernées? Il n’y a évidemment pas de chiffres officiels, et les chiffres des chercheurs sont encore à prendre avec précaution. Haykazun Alvrtsyan parle de 2,5 millions d’Arméniens musulmans en Turquie et 300 000 en Allemagne. Des études laissent penser que près de 7 millions de Turcs et de Kurdes ont un membre de leur famille qui est Arménien converti (incluant les belles familles). Il faut également savoir de qui l’on parle. Il y a des Turcs ou Kurdes ayant un grand parent arménien comme Fethiye Çetin. Mais il existe également des Arméniens convertis depuis le génocide, qui restent en groupe fermé, se mariant entre eux et gardant certaines traditions. Le manque de recherche est un problème pour appréhender cette communauté, et on comprend vite que les Arméniens musulmans forment un groupe non-homogène.

      La question de la religion pour les Arméniens est très difficile, car elle fait partie même de l’identité arménienne. L’Eglise est nationale, et l’alphabet arménien a été créé en 404 par un religieux, Mestrop Machtots, pour écrire la Bible en arménien. Les conversions autrefois impliquaient l’assimilation à un autre groupe, et les Arméniens ont toujours été représenté par leur patriarcat religieux, en particulier sous l’empire ottoman et y compris dans la Turquie moderne. Les traumatismes récents à la fois du génocide – perpétré par un Etat musulman, et la guerre avec l’Azerbaïdjan, là encore à majorité musulmane, font du rapport des Arméniens à l’Islam un sujet sensible. Pourtant, la question de l’identité évolue. Tout d’abord, les liens entre Arméniens et Alévis en Turquie ont toujours été bons, les Alévis ayant souvent protégé les Arméniens pendant le génocide, notamment dans le Dersim. Les Arméniens et les Iraniens ont également une bonne entente, les Arméniens d’Iran étant une communauté bien intégrée depuis des siècles et les deux pays entretiennent d’excellentes relations diplomatiques. Mais en Turquie également, une communauté musulmane arménophone, les Hemşin sont désormais considérés comme étant arméniens par les Arméniens eux-mêmes. Pour la quête d’identité des Arméniens musulmans, rejetés par les deux groupes, un long travail doit être fait. Un travail qui est à peine commencé, cent ans après le génocide des Arméniens.

        Պետք է շեշտել, որ հիշյալ հուշաքարը նվիրված է քրդական TIKKO ձախակողմյան կազմակերպության առաջնորդներից Արմենակ...


        Թուրքիայում ազգայնականները Թունջելիի (Դերսիմ) Նազըմիյեի շրջանի Խարիկ գյուղում 2015–ի ապրիլին Արմենակ Բաքըրջյանի հիշատակին նվիրված հուշաքարի հետ կապված աղավաղված տեղեկություններ են ներկայացրել, որը մեծ արձագանք է գտել։

        Թուրքական ազգայնական ուղղվածության Sozcu պարբերականը օրեր առաջ հրապարակում էր տպագրել, թե Դերսիմում ԱՍԱԼԱ–ի առաջնորդների հիշատակին հուշարձան է տեղադրվել։ Այս հրապարակումը մեծ արձագանք է գտել, որից հետո ազգայնական շրջանակները արշավ են սկսել եւ նահանգապետից պահանջել հեռացնել հուշարձանը։ Նահանգապետն էլ իր հերթին հայտարարել է, թե հուշարձանը քանդելու որոշում է կայացվել։

        Պետք է շեշտել, որ հիշյալ հուշաքարը նվիրված է քրդական TIKKO ձախակողմյան կազմակերպության առաջնորդներից Արմենակ Բաքըրջյանի հիշատակին։ Հուշաքարի վրա գրված է նաեւ Հրանտ Դինքի, Գեւորգ Չաուշի, Մոնթե Մելքոնյանի, Անդրանիկ Օզանյանի անունները։

        Նշենք, որ Արմենակ Բաքըրջյանը ծնվել է Դիարբեքիրում։ Նա աջակցել է Արեւմտյան Հայաստանի տարածքում մնացած հայերին Ստամբուլ տեղափոխելու գործին։ Գործունեության ընթացքում ծանոթացել է Հրանտ Դինքի հետ։ Միացել է քրդականTIKKO կառույցին եւ դարձել կառույցի հրամանատարներից մեկը։ Սպանվել է Խարբերդում թուրք զինվորականների կողմից իրականացված գործողության ժամանակ։

              «Մոսկվա» կինոթատրոնում կայացավ ռեժիսոր Նեզահաթ Գյունդողանի և նրա կնոջ՝ պրոդյուսեր Քազըմ Գյունդողանի «Վանքի երեխաները» փաստավավերագրական ֆիլմը: Ֆիլմի երևանյան ցուցադրությանն իրենց աջակցությունն ու մասնակցությունն էին ցուցաբերել պատգամավոր Արագած Ախոյանը և Արեւմտահայերի ազգային կոնգրեսը: Մեկ ժամ տևողությամբ ֆիլմը պատմում է Դերսիմի 1937-38թթ.ցեղասպանության մասին, որի հետևանքով մարդիկ ապրելու այլ տարբերակ չեն ունեցել, քան իսլամացումը:

              Տարբեր ճանապարհներով փրկված և քրդերի ու թուրքերի մեջ մեծացած հայ երեխաները, ովքեր այժմ ծեր են, տարիների հեռվից պատմում են այն դաժանությունների մասին, որոնք իրականացվել են իրենց և իրենց նախնիների նկատմամբ: Նրանք հիշում են, թե ինչպես են տղամարդկանց տարել ու առանձին կոտորել, հետո ինչպես են բոլորին գետը գցել:

              Դառը հուշերից բացի դժոխային է եղել հենց իրենց՝ ականատեսների կյանքը: Նրանք հայտնվել են քրդերի, ալևիների տներում.... Երկար ժամանակ լռել ու չեն բարձրաձայնել իրենց հայ լինելը, իսկ այսօր խախտում են լռությունը:

              Հերոսներից մեկը պատմում է, թե ինչպես են կոտորել իր հոր ընտանիքին հենց իր աչքի առջև, իսկ եղբայրներից մեկին քարերով սպանելու պատկերը մինչ մահը հետապնդել է նրան:

              «100 տարի թուրք հասարակությունը խեղաթյուրված պատմությամբ է առաջ շարժվել և իրականությունը ներկայացնելու ամենակարճ միջոցը մշակույթն է»,-ասաց Արագած Ախոյանը:

              Ցուցադրությանը ներկա էր նաև «Անատոլու կուլտուր» հիմնադրամի նախագահ Օսման Կավալան, որի հետ «Վերադարձ» մշակութային բարեգործական հիմնադրամի և Արևմտահայերի ազգային կոնգրեսի մշակույթի հանձնաժողովի նախագահ Արագած Ախոյանը հուշագիր ստորագրեց:

                  • Պատմական Բինգյոլում հայկական Սուրբ Գևորգ հայկական եկեղեցին պարբերաբար ենթարկվում է քուրդ գանձագողերի հարձակումներին

                    Ներկայի Թուրքիայի տարածքում գտնվող Բինգյոլ նագանգի Քիղը շրջանի Չանաքչը գյուղում դեռևս կանգուն մնացած Սուրբ Գևորգ հայկական եկեղեցին պարբերաբար ենթարկվում է տեղի քուրդ և զազա գանձագողերի հարձակումներին, այս մասին հայտնում է capakcurgazetesi.com.tr կայքը։

                    250 տարվա պատմություն ունեցող եկեղեցու նորոգման Չանաքչըի գյուղապետը հատուկ խնդրանքով դիմել է տեղական իշխանություններին դեռևս 2013թ.-ին, սակայն մինչ օրս որևէ պատասխան չի ստացել, ինչի պատճառով որոշել է հարցը ևս մեկ անգամ բարձրացնել լրատվամիջոցների օգնությամբ։

                    Գյուղապետը նշում է, որ նորոգման չենթարկվելու կամ տարածքի գանձագողերի գործողությունները կանխող որևէ միջոցառում չձեռնարկելու դեպքում եկեղեցին կարող է վերջնականապես ավերվել։

                    Ավելի վաղ Էրզրումում գործող Մշակութային և բնական արժեքների պահպանման տարածաշրջանային վարչությունը որոշում էր կայացրել հատուկ պահպանության տակ առնել եկեղեցին ու ստանձնել դրա վերակառուցումը, մինչդեռ նորոգման ծրագրերը այդպես էլ գործնական փուլ չեն մտել։

                    Նշենք, Լոզանի պայմանագրի 42-րդ հոդվածի 3-րդ մասով «Թուրքական կառավարությունը պարտավորվում է լիակատար պահպանության տակ առնել եկեղեցիները, սինագոգները, գերեզմաններն ու նշյալ փոքրամասնությունների այլ կրոնական հաստատությունները»: Բնականաբար, «լիակատար պահպանությունը» ներառում է ոչ միայն եկեղեցիները չքանդելն ու չավերելը, այլև դրանց ամրացումն ու նորոգումը։

                      Թուրքիայի Վանի նահանգում գտնվող հայկական Վարագավանք եկեղեցու պատերը պարբերաբար քանդվում են:

                      Վանի նահանգի պատմական կառույցների և շրջակա միջավայրի պահպանությամբ զբաղվող միության նախագահ Ալի Քալչըքի փոխանցմամբ` Վարագավանքից քանդված քարերն օգտագործվում են մզկիթներ, գյուղական տարատեսակ շինություններ կառուցելու նպատակով:


                      Վարագավանքը գտնվում է Վան քաղաքի հարավ-արևելքում Վարագա լեռան արևմտյան լանջին:

                      Վանքը կառուցվել է 7-րդ դարում Վանի արքեպիսկոպոսի համար ծառայել է, որպես նստավայր:
