I think it may be a bit more nuanced than that... Are you talking about K-12, college, professional programs, etc.? What field of study?

Class size is criticle for me.
The ideal group size is between 7/12.
To study with a certain teacher one may have to forgo smaller class but otherwise , small , quiet class is best opportunity to learn. IMHO.

Re: Public School vs Private School

Class size is one difference. There are many differences. Public schools tend to have more support services and can accommodate students of varying ability and needs better typically. The teachers are certified whereas for private they are not. Private schools can change the curriculum and teach what they want (e.g. that people rode dinosaurs). There's no transparency in the system, so you don't see how your tuition dollars are spent and the schools not accountable in any sense that encourages regular evaluation and improvement efforts. And so on...

I haven't done an exhaustive search of the research in this area, but I know of at least one large study that showed on average, once you control for background characteristics (race, parents education level, income, etc.) public school kids tend to have better outcomes.

Eventhough I like small classroom sizes, I agree with you Siggie
public school sticks with something as far as the curriculum & its consistencey where as private school do whatever they want at any moment

Re: Public School vs Private School

Public schools have more resources which allows them to be more flexible and more able to meet the needs of their students. I have been in both systems and have seen the severe limitations private schools have to work with because of lack of funding, programs, size... This does not mean there are no good private schools but public schools generally can meet more of demands of their students then private schools.

My post on classroom size was not an endorsement of private schools.
I had a 650 triumph motorcycle when I was 16 years old. A car did not see me and made a left turn in front of me. I ended up in the hospital. I had quit high school and was working. After getting out of hospital, family moved my busted up self back to my mothers house to recuperate. While there I was put back in school via telephone while I lay in a hospital bed in mothers front room. After I was able to walk but still had cast on arm and skull fracture busted ear drum were still in the process of healing, I went to a school for physically handicapped.
A public school for the extreme . I was only temporarily in handicaps situation.
The small class size plus teacher consideration saw me go from basic "d" grades to straight "a's". During this time I realized how simple this was and also realized I could do a years worth of school in 1/2 months easily.
Whatever advantages the public schools may have, the class size is detrimental to actual learning.
      A distinct detriment.

Yep, but despite knowing the effects of class size, institutions have had to increase class sizes over time. Enrollment has increased tremendously (especially in college) and funding from state/federal sources has not increased proportionally.

Yes, how sad and unfortunate for the coming generation, the country, and the world at large.

Is it just a coinsidence that as the school funding lags behind the legitimate need, and the mining industry oversight lags way behind on needed funding, and the food and drug oversight is grossly underfunded, and on & on ...
That the explosion in billionairs and wanna be ultra rich have all needed funding?
My opinion is .., one would need a proctologist to find where the USA priorities are really located.
