How are Uber driver fares calculated? (Updated 2017 rates)
When someone takes a ride with you, they are charged a fare plus a “Rider Fee”. The fare for UberX in Los Angeles is currently $0.15 a minute + $0.90 a mile. If there is “Surge Pricing” then the entire fare is multiplied by that number. Surge Pricing means Uber increases the fare prices during certain times of higher demand, making these hours more attractive for drivers.
Let’s say for example someone takes a ride from West Hollywood to Downtown L.A. (which is approx. 8 miles and 30 minutes). Furthermore, let’s add a 1.3 surge. The calculation for the ride looks like this:
      (8 mi. x $0.90 + 30 min. x $0.15) x 1.3 surge + $1.65 Rider Fee = $16.86
This is the total amount charged to the passenger.
What percentage do Uber drivers make?
Uber takes a commission out of the $16.86.
After a deduction of the $1.65 Rider Fee, Drivers keep 75% of the total fare price for a given ride. Uber takes 25% of the fare.
So here is the math for our example after Uber’s commission:
      $16.86 – $1.65 Rider Fee – ($15.21 x 0.25) = $11.41
This is how much the driver is paid before any expenses. My rule of thumb (this may not be an accurate number for you) is that I spend about 10% on gas and other vehicle expenses and 10% on taxes on average (after all the deductions). Which in this case is calculated as follows:
      $11.41 x 0.80 = $9.13
This is the approximate net income from the 30 minute-ride.

It sounds like a waste of time. Also, 20% sounds on the low end for wear & tear with gas.
Plus there should be many miles that are non-billable to get from one client to another with times without any clients if you work all day.
Can you even get the Standard Deductible Mileage Rate 56 cents per mile deduction on your taxes?

I used to own a small transportation company not to long ago. I can tell you, if you drive a gas driven vehicle 5 or 6 days a week steady, your maintainence/ repair costs every 90 days will be at least $200 but more likely several hundred. And at least $800+ every 160 days.
I put $23,000 into my rig after the purchase price.
      Watch out buddy!!!
And change the oil with extreme regularity.

If I ever would have to go into that business, most likely will purchase a used Toyota Prius with under 50.000 miles for around $10.000
They are extensively being used in NY for Taxis and it seams they are doing well for the rough environment. Also they have great milage in the city or short distance travels.

You're better off going to school, getting a certification in something, and making money like that.

      Re: UBER Driving

      I"m still concerned .
Weather your driving truck or taxi , the transport business has many comonalities .
I had to put a minimum of 30,000 miles per year and usually 50 to 50 thousands of miles or more to make any apreciable money. Same with taxi. If you do the cost analysis on maintainence for every 100,000 miles , your gonna be shocked. I used to h opld back a minimum of $10,000 . You are not going to be able to keep every $ you make f opr your own personal expenses. , or you"ll get shut down fast .
Also , I t cost me between 3 and 4 hundred $$$ per year for my persoal car auto insurance . I f I put that same car on commercial insurance , I t costs a minimum of $3,000 per year !!! You drive for uber , and your driving commercial . Have you called your insurance company ? If you try to get by on the sly , and you have an accident , and the authorities find out , your claim will be denied , and you will be left holding the bag . B e real careful on that !!!
Lastly , ypur gonna need to drive at least 12 hours a day 6 days a week to make any real $$$ . If you spend that much time driving on the road , you are going to experience experience more ijerks per day than a psych at a nut house .
Please be careful in your choice .
Not everyone is meant for higher education , but the 80% or so of regular people are as valuable and deserving of a decent life as the best educated , dispite this sick world scewed system . A dear uncle is beloved weather he has a hig or modest education .
      Good luck .
