      March 8 - 2005 Koenigsegg CCR: Koenigsegg has broken the world speed record for a production car. This record had been held for approximately 12 years by the McLaren F1.

      (from Koenigsegg Press Release) On February the 28th 2005, at 12.08 local time, the Koenigsegg CCR broke the production road car speed record, achieving a new official top speed of 388 (387.87) km/h at Italy’s Nardo Prototipo proving ground.

      A team of five Koenigsegg engineers and mechanics together with founder Christian von Koenigsegg ran, a technically standard Koenigsegg CCR in order to take the top speed record for productions road cars. The famous supercar test driver, Loris Bicocchi who is a veteran recorder breaker, drove the CCR.

      The Koenigsegg CCR raised McLaren's previously unofficial mark of 372 km/h set at Nardo/Prototipo in 1993 with over 15 km/h. On top of this the CCR broke the official McLaren F1 record of 386.7 km/h, which was set on the 9 km straight line VW Ehra facility in Wolfsburg Germany.

      A team of Nardo Prototipo technicians independently verified the speed of the CCR. The car was clocked using Tag Heuer´s Splitmaster 650 with photocells stationary at the track, recording the average speed during 1 km.

      Nardo Prototipo is a circular track with a circumference of 12.5 km. This means that the car is driven in a constant turning motion, which makes the exercise and speed even more impressive. The steering wheel at this speed is kept at around 30 degrees of constant angel, which equivalates to a sharp corner for the speed.

      The constant turning motion of the car creates extra friction on the tires. This extra friction overcomes the extra horsepower that was needed for further acceleration. The maximum speed was reached at around 6790 rpm, which is not equivalent to the maximum hp level, which is at a higher rpm.

      With this verification of speed, Christian von Koenigsegg is even more confident that the Koenigsegg CCR is capable of reaching its projected top speed of 395 km/h, or more, in a straight line.

      Driver Loris Bicocchi was very impressed by the performance of the car. He feels happy to finally prove the performance of the Koenigsegg. “This test was very important for the customers and owners of Koenigsegg cars. It proves that their belief and faith in the small Koenigsegg Company was well founded”.

      Filmator documented the record attempt. Filmator is a Swedish filmcrew that currently is making a documentary about the Koenigsegg Company for Swedish television.

      The official Test Report is issued by Prototipo, acting as a third party verificator and is forwarded to the Guinness Book of Records for processing.

      A pressconference will be held at 12:00 AM on Wednesday March 2nd 2005 at our Geneva Motor Show stand 2053.

      When someone ask: what is "The Fastest Production Car" there are obvoius and hidden qualifiers. Production itself is a qualifier. So is Fastest... and in the U.S. "fastest" is OFTEN CONFUSED with "quickest" (as in fastest accelerating). Fastest and quickest are NOT the same. Zero to 60 mph times and the quarter mile have NOTHING to do with the fastest. Although over the last 20 years I admit it is a little less confusing for most Americans who are drag strip happy... not that there is anything wrong with that, its just one narrow window of performance.

      The new Barabus TKR, the Veryon, and McClaren F1 are often mentioned in Fastest production car forums. They are production cars in the since that with enough money and patience... they can be purchased with possibly a year or more wait to have it built... However, in sanctioned road racing, 200 is often mentioned as the minumum yearly production number to be considered a "production car"... which means the three super exotics listed above would NOT qualify (under the 200 a year rule).

      Since I am building a "production" based car to run at Bonneville to set a land world speed record or two, this is interesting to me. Currently, at Bonneville, the "fastest Production based car running in a Production class is John Rains modified 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans-Am with a 272 cubic inch V-6 Turbo. This car's top speed is well above the three super Exotics listed above. Yes, this car does have an absolutely stock factory body... it is lowered though and generates far more horsepower than it did stock. However, the rules by the sanctioning body at Bonneville DO NOT allow engine configurations that were not originally available that year make and model... You for instance could not take a turbo charged engine if not originally a factory option... and the engine must use the dame number of cylinders and basic block configuration. Well, the 1989 Turbo Trans-Am was based on a stage 2 indy racing block which was not acually used in most production units BUT a few test models... that's enough. So John Rains car produces more horsepower than a Veryon and an McClaren F1 COMBINED (it actually does). This 4.5 litre v-6 producing close to 2000 sea Net hp in a Trans-Am went 303 mph out the back door at Bonneville and averaged over 297mph in a flying mile. What would happen if you geared up a Barabus TKR, or the Veryon, and McClaren F1 and increased horse power to = John Rains car... then of the four, which would be the fastest... I already know the answer, it would still be John Rains Turbo Trans-AM, even though the total aerodynamic drag on the Trans-Am is slightly higher than the Ultra-exotics. Why ??? hint... believe it or not, the Trans-Am is more stable across multiple dementional axis, which is whyit can achieve higher top speeds at ultra high horsepower levels.
      iN a nutshell, at Bonneville and when your shootiing for 300 mph, Ultra exotics, Fararris, Lambos, etc HAVE BEEN TRIED and ... they suck at land world speed records.

      We always hear manufacturers saying that they are making a "racecar for the road," but Aston is actually talking about a Formula 1-worthy car that is fully street-legal. Or even better, a car with F1-like abilities, without being hampered by the severe technological restrictions of the sport.

      Officially, Aston Martin’s CEO Andy Palmer says the car, now codenamed Project AM-RB 001 (a mashup of the company names), will be "about spectacular beauty, aerodynamic efficiency, advanced technology and getting around a race track in a fast but elegant way." Talk to Aston Martin personnel privately, though, and they say they are gunning for the fastest car, period — potentially encompassing both 0 to 60 and overall top speed. They’re even entertaining the idea of outdoing the new Bugatti Chiron, which will be electronically limited to 261 mph on the street. The hopes are for a road-legal car that could shatter that Nürburgring lap record.
      Could it take down the Chiron?
      Contracts with Red Bull for the audacious undertaking were only recently completed, and will see Newey serving as the technical director while styling will be performed by Aston Martin’s chief creative officer, Marek Reichman. Aston’s bespoke customization department, Q, will be responsible for making the car road-legal.

      Currently the AM-RB 001 — also known as "Project Nebula" — exists only in the virtual world: it’s been designed using computer simulations and software which are a fixture in the fast-moving world of F1, where cars are redesigned every season.

      The glyphic rendering provided by the company is pretty inscrutable. The left-hand bubble is the front wheel well and the top bubble the xxxxpit. The rest of the swoopy lines are the rear of the car (and would obviously suggest a mid-engine design). Squint at it and, well… we should be shown a physical model sometime this year, Aston says.

      This is a huge leap for Aston. It has long had some of the most beautiful cars, but as an independent company without a massive R&D budget or the economies of scale enjoyed by companies like Volkswagen Group — which owns Porsche, Audi, Bugatti, and Lamborghini — technology has been a recurring issue. A recent partnership with Mercedes-AMG has given Aston new transmissions, electronics, and turbocharged engines, but AMG will not be involved in this project.

      Rather, the hypercar will be a synthesis between Aston, Red Bull Technologies, and Red Bull Racing, which has won four overall F1 championships since 2010. Newey is Red Bull’s chief technical officer and the most winning F1 designer of all time, taking ten Constructors’ Championships in his career. The Englishman is a designer with a super-keen understanding of aerodynamics who has worked with Williams F1 and McLaren before moving to Red Bull in 2010. He’s even designed an F1 prototype for the Gran Turismo video game series.

      Newey says he’s always wanted to work on a supercar, and this is his chance. "[The idea] has always bubbled away, resulting in sketches and doodles over the years."

      Representatives say the car will feature aerodynamic lessons from F1 with the design language of an Aston. One might expect some cues from pricey, limited-edition Aston Martins like the One-77 and the racetrack-only Vulcan, but we also think that Nebula is likely to push well beyond those cars.
      This might change the way hypercars are made
      As for powertrain, we can only guess, but one would fully expect a hybridized powertrain that follows along the lines of the LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918. A KERS system, which is a racing technology that temporarily stores extra power in a flywheel and gives an extra burst of speed on demand, also seems likely.

      Either way, the Aston-Red Bull car will be expensive and rare. And it may very well change the space race among hypercar makers like Bugatti and Koenigsegg — not to mention the other players with F1 experience, namely Ferrari and McLaren.

      If there's a single all-out masterpiece of automotive engineering to look forward to over the next couple years, this may be the one.

      Top speed and HP does not work well in curved canyon or motorbike tracks.......it is performance of the handling and riding ability.

      I used to smoke 1000cc superbikes with my 600F3 in canyons........they were a speck in my mirrors.
