Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

  • Question on Student Loans

How long does it roughly take to pay off student loans? I have about 11,000 amassed right now and that's only undergrad. Law school will take a hefty toll as well. Do you guys have any student loan experiences and if so please share.

I got about 15 grand left.

Is it a good idea to pay it off right away, or should I just do my 10 years worth of monthly payment.

Well, the long term is always the accumulation of interest. It's always better to pay it off and be clean as soon as possible. But if you can't then I suggest sticking with the monthly and eventually paying it off. But do not have gaps in your payments be consistent.

It entirely depends on how fast you pay it off. If you are only paying the minimum payments, it will take a loooooooooong time. The most important thing is to lock them in at a low rate ...

But with 11K, at 4% APR:
at $111 a month, will take you 10 years to pay it off.
        at $202 a month, it'll take you 5 years.

As far as my experiences, I had about 20K overall from my undergrad days which were all subsidized. This means I didn't have to pay the interest while at school (which was great since I went on and on and on in grad school ). I did not take any loans in grad school as my advisor would pay my tuition, I didn't have any rent to worry about, and I had a couple of jobs on the side to pay for the rest (car, insurance, food, etc). Thankfully, CS majors don't need too many books either

I consolidated and locked in all that at about 3% 2 years ago ... all through Sallie Mae. Now the minimum payments are something like $138 or something. I have other high interest loans (car, mortgage, etc) so I'm trying to get rid of those first ... so I only make the minimum payments on the student loans for now.

Life is about acquiring debt. The people with the most debt are better than you.

I had 50 grand when I finished school. I have been making payments of at least 1 grand a month for the past 2 years. Now I'm locked in with Sallie Mae at 2.7% interest and will have this loan paid off plus 10 grand extra in 20 years if I only make payments of $175 a month. However, since there is no prepayment penalty, I will keep making payments above what is minimum so I can finish without paying more than 2 grand extra.

            Loans suck.

CK, that's excellent. By the way, I think with Sallie Mae you can make multiple payments a month so if you can, do 500-500 every 2 weeks heck or even better, 250 every week ... of course that depends on how you get paid. If you get paid monthly, then what I said doesn't make much sense

We are choosing a loan for me right now, besides the ones I get from my school. Its such a stress factor, but I guess we should be greatful for loans.

11 isnt a big debt, its actually pretty good even for undergrad alone. We saw loans that you dont have to start paying off until after graduation. Thats probably what you want for law school.

I get paid every 2 weeks. So if I split the payments what would be the benefit?
