Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

    Re: Sevan

    YEGHVARD RESERVOIR in short description:

While most reservoirs are built by closing a valley by a dam, Yeghvard is a very original idea, born from several needs:
1- To stock water in winter and spring, to spare Sevan (Similar in this to other reservoirs of the Ararat valley: Aparan, Akhurian, Marmarik, Azat...).
2- To take some advantage of the Sevjur river. As a matter of fact, this is a unique river in RA territory, wich has steady stream, due to the fact that it is fed by underground/artesian sources of the Ararat bassin. That gives it the third largest debit after Akhuryan and Hraztan in the basin, but with small use. As a matter of fact the total lengt is some 40 Km only, in lowland Armavir region. It comes out near Metzamor (and is used to cool the stations turbines, one of the reasons the site was chosen, ignoring proximity withe Yerevan and the border...), and feeds the irrigation system of the region, then ends in the Arax. So most of the water goes to the Azaris...
3- Even if filled to its maximum, the Aparan reservoir was unable to catch all the spring water of the Kasakh river (melt of Arakadz), so a good chunk was lost during spring snow melting period.
4- The Hraztan river, wile generating from Sevan lake (an thus dried during winter if we decide so), drains nevertheless a lot of smaller affluents (one being Marmarik), and thus, no matter what we do, some water is wasted in same spring period.
5- To create a major water reservoir/recreation lake near Yerevan (only 15 Km, 1300 m hight), permitting tourism on a much longer period than the 2 months available on Sevan shores (1900 m), for the Yervan aglomeration. The small Yerevan lake was of no use, given its size, pollution, and situation in the middle of the city, after its mushroom growth.

Wile the objective needs were there, the problem was to find a place you could flood, given the high density of population in the Hraztan gorge (Arzni, Tcharentzavan, Apovian, Nor Hadjen, Hraztan....), and anyway, lack of capacity of the futur reservoir to meet the objectives.
Finally, the original choice of Yeghvard was made:

    The minuses were:
    - No natural stream, so you needed to bring in the water by the irrigation system already used to irrigate the Yeghavard district: while this was not that hard regarding Hraztan and Kasakh rivers (natural gravity), it supposed use of electric power, to pump the water of Sevjur from its lowland position to 1350 m...
    - Yeghvard plain is a 'depression' situated between the streams of Hraztan and Kasakh rivers, and is by a matter of fact a very fertile land, easy to irrigate.
    - You needed not one, but two platinas:dams to close the 2 ends of the plain, and protect 2 major aglomerations:
Yeghvard and Nor Yerznka. You can see the 2 dams already well on this image:

Plus, the huge platina on yeghvard side is original, due to its angle....

Nevertheless, the decision was made, and most of the costly investment was already done during soviet period.
Most of the earthwork was done, plus, as planned, some of the rich soil was excavated and then transported by tractors/Gamaz trucks from the bed of the futur reservoir, to the sides of the road Yerevan /Ashtarak (actual location of Broshyan apple orchards, fertile fields wasted by our generation to mushroom 'Vahagni' and similar real state projects). This part of the project was a luxury only soviets could have afforded while having no economic limits....., and that we wasted: so when you see the remaining orchards of apple each time you pass on this road, think of it....

So, today, we have all the necessities still in place.
We have this project 80-90% already financed (still in need of care, since if not preserved, could be endangered as the case of Marmarik, plus needs to forbid any investment/construction in the would be lake bed).
We need political will to end the project, and find a solution or a budget for the pumps, to take in the water of Sevjur.

PS: There was still 2 last parts of this big Sevan saving projects:
1- The Tzoraket reservoir (more or less need to deviate water by tunnels): now totally abandoned do to lack of need of the water for Sevan, and 'privatisation' of the reservoir/hydro project to oligarkhs (already talked about).
2- An other artificial lake similar to Yeghvard, to stock Akhuryan water in the ex-Baghramyan districts useless lava fields, north of the Baghramyan army training center, between Lusakn, Karakert and Ashnak villages, but with only one platina, and no need for earth saving.... while exploiting thousands of acres unusable lands... unfortunately, a very small part of the project was already done, the platina never started, when 1988 came... so this will remain a fantazia never to be accomplished, since a similar project would worth billions today.

Unfortunately, theis MGM/Kirk Kirkoryan project seems to be a fantasia....
If materialised, no matter casino, etc... bad sides, it would have solved a strategic problem for the country.

Main task of the decade: Yeghvard reservoir

Construction of Yeghvard’s Water Reservoir Needs Sponsors

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The project for the construction of Yeghvard’s water reservoir has been reviewed by ArmWaterDesign Institute at the request of Armenia’s Agriculture Ministry. This water reservoir–if built–will significantly reduce the volume of water pumped out from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes.
According to the original project–the reservoir capacity should have been 228 mln cubic meters–of which 90 mln cm of water must have been accumulated from the Hrazdan and Kasakh rivers–while the rest should have been raised by means of pump stations set on the river Sevjur.
According to the deputy head of the institute Yuri Javadian–the project was discussed at the technical council and a decision on establishing a water reservoir with a capacity of 90 mln cubic meters was made. This water reservoir will give the opportunity of reducing the water pumped out from Sevan by 41.5 mln cm.
As Javadian said–according to the technical-economic calculations–about $70 million be required for the construction of the water reservoir. The plan has already been presented to the Foreign Affairs Ministry–which has sent it to foreign countries for sponsors.

    Re: Sevan

In all these bad news, one very good news.
Long awaited, Marmarik reservoir was commissioned:

This will take some pressure off Sevan.
The dam was built in Soviet times, but with very poor quality.
It failed during filling of water, and a major catastrophe was miraculously avoided (Apovian, Getchariss are under the dam).
Finally a WB loan permitted refurbishing of the dam.
No major hydro power from this, but spares water from Sevan.

Remains one major dam to be completed.
The major, the big one: Yeghvard dam.....

    Re: Sevan

Another bad news yet for Sevan.
As if the poisoning from Sotk (Gold) and Chorja (Chrome) mines, with illegal factories built in total impunity was not enough, now the water coming from Arpa will be poisoned due to open pit mining on Amulsar (the montain dominating Ketchud and Spantaryan reservoirs, both providing water to the tunnel Vorotan-Arpa Sevan).
To remind: state revenues from mining are minimal, due to fraud, and lack of final refining (Armenia exports 'concentrate', that is all the pollution is for us, end product in Germany, but since we exported 'concentrate', often >95% enriched, it is not taxed as gold, silver, molybden or copper...)
If the state could impose close pit (tunnels) in place of open pits, the damage would be less, but oligarkhs will have less bonanza money....
    It never happens now days.
