CAREERISM,
COLLABORATION &
COWARDICE

By careerism I mean the aberration
of placing one’s own career
above the interests and welfare
of the community and the nation.
*
By collaboration I mean
freely choosing to work with the enemy
even when it means betraying the nation.
*
Cowardice is not a word that needs a definition
because there is a coward in all of us.
Speaking for myself,
whenever I visit my dentist
I remind him of the fact that
I happen to be an orthodox coward.
*
Petain and Laval were two notorious
French collaborators who after World War II
were arrested, tried, found guilty and condemned to death.
*
Both Zohrab and Mikoyan qualify
as careerists and collaborators because
they knew better but pretended otherwise.
Zohrab was eventually assassinated
by his friend Talaat; and at one point
in his brilliant career Mikoyan experience
such fear of his former friend Stalin
that he kept a revolved under his pilllow.
*
One reason we don’t think of them
as cowards and collaborators is that
we place their status as celebrities
above our objective judgment and honesty.
