I personally knew him and his family. He was a brilliant man of great character who fell prey to one of his few vices, smoking. Were most people worth half of his caliber, the world would be a much better place for it. A little respect, please.

I'm pretty sure I've read that his mother was J3wish except she hid it from him and he didn't find out until her death.

Actually, the "his mother was J3wish" thing seems to have been a bit of Zionist propaganda. The Zionists wanted to imply that Hitchen's opposition to Judaism was not down to its content and its practices and its malign influence on the world today, but was just because his mind had been poisoned by his mother against everthing J3wish because his mother (or one of her ancestors) was a J3wish convert to Christianity. Only a J3w could produce such a claim, and it is a claim produced only for internal consumption, as a way for J3ws to easily dismiss Hitchens' critiques of Judaism without bothering to confront any of the issues he raised: "Hitchens is the one with the problem, not us".

This is the exact equivalent of what Hitchens did in the article I dissected earlier: the Hitchens explanation of all America�s problems in the world, why America is so hated everywhere: "We are richer than they are, and they are jealous about it" so they are the ones with the problem, not us. It is another example of Hitchens having often behaved exactly like those he opposed.

This article sums up my views of Hitchens post-2001 (which I only found out about a year or two ago). Besides his commendable views on recognition of the Armenian Genocide, his post-2001 political views were sick and twisted. He should have really just stuck to religion.
