hello everyone. this is my first time here.
i am a university student studying medicine and i am doing research project on personal hygiene habits and the relationship with disease.

i need to ask a very personal question as i cannot find out this information from any books or websites about armenians. and i do not know any armenians. i have found out this question about other cultures such as indians, arabs, south americans and japanese. but i have not been able to find out the answer to my question about armenians.

Please understand that this a real question for my research project and i am not joking . this is a very personal question.

my question is,,,,,,,, IS IT PART OF ARMENIAN CULTURE TO WASH THE BACKSIDE WITH WATER AFTER DOING DEFACATION ( xxxx, poo).?? or is it just normal to use toilet paper to just wipe.

OTHER CULTURES USE WATER LIKE JAPANESE, INDIANS ARABS AND SOUTH AMERICANS. I NEED TO KNOW IF IT IS IN ARMENIAN CULTURE TO USE WATER AFTER VISITING THE BATHROOM FOR DEFACATION( xxxx, poo).

i know this question is very personal but i am doing research on hygiene habits of different cultures around the world.
i know that some armenians might use water, BUT I NEED TO KNOW IF IT IS PART OF CULTURE TO USE WATER LIKE IT IS IN OTHER CULTURES OF THE WORLD. I NEED TO KNOW IF THE MAJORITY USE IT.

THANK U SO MUCH FOR ANY REPLIES IN ADVANCE. I REALLY APPRECIATE UR HELP AND I HOPE U DONT THINK I AM JOKING OR ABUSING OR ANYTHING BECUASE THIS IS A REAL QUESTION.

thank u so much everybody.
take care,
Bye

wow, i wish i got to use a bidet, I saw one once, and at first I had no idea what it was. I had to ask my friend what the hell is that for? He said, you spray your ass w/ water instead of wiping it. And I was all what the xxxx people really do that? And then I realized that it was probably, If I never talk about it, a more comfartable and entertaining way to go, if I wanted to actually care about getting off the toilet. I mostly read on the toilet.

The Toilet is a man's throne. It is one of two places where a man is free from politics, economics, and women. Where a man educates himself and plans out his life.

The other is a bar.

All of the major events were either planned by some guy on the can or two guys in the bar: WW2, Communism, Christianity, and Zionism were all by two guys in a bar. Think about it.

I definately have water in my bowels, and by bowels, do you mean toilet bowel. Because in my toilet bowel there is water. I'm sure there is also water in my bowels. And I mean the bowel movements themselves have water in them. IS that intersting enouhg fo ryou, does that satisfy your scientific enquiries? If so, I appreciate the fact I was such a help.

Um, how about no.

And Thai, extra water in your bowel movement could only mean one thing...

I didnt say there was EXTRA water in my bowels. I was confusing bowel w/ bowl. But like I said I'm sure bowels have some water in them. Right? Please don't tell me it's not true.

No, I'd have to say that WW2 was actually planned by the mere fact that WWI was never really finished, and that Germany was punished so harshly in it that it got pissed and wanted to seek revenge. So Hitler came along and got it some revenge. Hence World War 2.

Where do these people get such idea? By siting around in a bar. Couple guys, drinking, pissed off, doodling on some xxxxtail napkins....add a little Zionist support...BAM..Nazi Germany.

If there is a bidet there then I will use it, but most places in US dont come with bidets so we all normally use toilet paper. When I lived in the Soviet Union, I came across bidets more often, but it still was not something thats expected.

Haha, funny thing is my Grandpa (has been to) that bar. Hitler's bar. I think it is in Munich. Haha, I wish I was there.
God damn.

Yes, it is funny that WW2 does have roots in a bar, like you said. I know Hitler's rise to power is associated with an event in a bar, but I forget what, but he was only a player in the larger conflict that was bruing because of the reasons I stated. It was really just a continuation of World War I which had its roots in the millions of tangling alliances that had been made throughout Europe.

What you are saying is that all wars are part of a continuous history: Cold war was started because of the lack of communication btwn East and West, From this war of words arose Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, wars between Israel and the Arabs, wars between Pakistan and India, war between IRan and Iraq, wars throughout Africa and revolutions throughout Latin America. The majority, if not all wars, have somethign to do with previous or current wars.

Islamic cultures use water to clean their rear ends after a dump. I don't think it's an Armenian thing but Armenians that may engage in it have obviously been rubbed off by living among Islamic peoples. I personally love water since I was in it for 9 months so no reason not to use it, with a combination of toilet paper etiquette.

It's not culture-specific nowadays. It may have been mainly used by the muslims but nowadays nearly each culture has some of its people doing an inter-cleaning.

I know a Jap/Italian doing this stuff......

so i basically gather that using water after a bowel movement is not part of armenian culture although some armenians may do it. thanks.

yes , wiping with toilet paper and then washing backside with water is mainly an islamic practise, although, cultures that also insist on it r the japanese, they r shinto and animist religions, and many latino countries do it...which r catholic. thailand also which is bhuddist.

anyway guys, thanks so much for ur time, and i guess this is the end of the thread? this is a nice forum. i found myself checking other areas as well.

Here is a link you may find of interest, Bathroom Habits Study done by someone at the University of Alberta.

http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~davidson/bathroom/

Also I forgot again with the Islamic culture, something about you use only one hand to wipe your backside. To shake someone's hand with that hand is considered to be an insult.

If an Armenian does wipe his backside with water, we could call that a Turkish bath. Phrasing it that way could change the habits of an entire culture.

The insult hand your speak of, like in many cultures, is the left hand. You do nearly all things wit your right hand in Islamic culture.

that is so *&^%$ gross!!! 9% never wash their hands! and 40 some % sometimes wash! wtf! no wonder i wonder where people's hands have been when shaking hands with strangers (sometimes even people you know!) and carry alcohol wipes with me! people are just freakin grosss!!!

i don't even care about the statistical significance or the sample size or even the method of analysis of this study! as long as there are people out there who don't wash their hands, that's significant enough for me!

and this is MORE than just gross! hepatitis A is transmitted through the fecal oral route; that's why they have those 'wash your hands before returning to work' signs in public bathrooms! so the ignorant idiots who cook/serve/deliver your food WASH THEIR HANDS!

rickhd

I totally agree however how many times have you seen someone walk out of a washroom without washing their hands.

To gross you out further I remember hearing about someone doing a test on common public things, banking machines, phones that kind some of stuff. Fecal matter was found on the keys of banking machines!

Locally where I live we just had an outbreak of Norwalk virus in our hospitals. Norwalk-like viruses are spread through food and water contaminated with infected feces. Those infected can then pass it on through physical contact with others.

In armenia people hardly have enough water to wash their hands with or for taking a shower with the hot water running on different hours of the day.

Your question is actually a very important question..Many people who have answered you here have just given useless answers .They almost made mockery of your question..I, myself can understand the importance and meaning of your question..
Let me start..
Washing your back with water arter defecation is mainly a regional thing..so in a given region different nationalities or religions might do the same thing..either wash it or not wash it.So what I mean is it is not a RELIGION thing..Saying Muslims do it is just not good enough..For example if you go to Lebanon you will see different nationalities and religions...Muslims,Christians,Arabs,Armenians,Dur zis..Probably they are all washing..You cant say Christian Arabs don't wash but Muslim Arabs wash their back..They must all be doing the same..
Your question is actually very helpful..it is a cultural shock for some when they change countries and when they see people not washing or washing their backs after toilet..When I firsat came to England it was a shock for me..I knew people did not wash here but I still can't accept it..It is just very strange for me.It is a cultural thing but it is not altogether a religion thing..We got Christians in Turkey..I know they wash it..
Ilya ,also you said....;" wiping with toilet paper and then washing backside with water is mainly an islamic practise"...That is wrong..first wash then wipe..Main thing is washing and getting it clean ..Wiping is for drying purposes..
what I don't understand is ;aren't there any Armenians from Armenia here to answer this question??
One thing I really wonder is using shoes at home??Do you guys wear shoes at home?/Probably you all do..thinking almost all of you are from USA,,so this is a regional culture thing. In Turkey we never wear shoes at home..

As the dean of the National Ass Cleaning Institute of Armenia, I declare that people in Armenia (6 years ago anyways) only use toilet paper. Having said that I must, out of solidarity, announce that the toilet paper in Armenia "was" only slightly more comfortable than fine sandpaper. Also, my roomate (here in US) is from Saudi Arabia (he's now also a very good friend of mine). While they do digitally manipulate their backsides, they also wash (at least 5 times a day) a lot and are in fact a little obsessed with it. So I never had E Coli from contact with my roommate.

So profound. There we have it. The lost wisdom of the ages. Washing your ass helps clean off the dingleberries that might otherwise stick to your ass hair.

The best answer yet!
I am form Armenia, lived in many countries, including Egypt, Libya, Holland, Chekhoslovakia, Russia, etc. I live in USA for last 10 years and specializing in Middle Eastern studies. I teach.
Yes, washing is cultural thing...and very clean thing, I would say. Bidets are the best and, actually very much reccomended by doctors... prevents from hemmorroids (use only cold water and with pressure).
About shoes, dear Aram 33. In the US , unfortunately, most people (mostly in the South) do not wear anything on their feet at home. Well, tile at home is clean. But that remidns me a farm, or farmers...sorry. I was raised in the culture, where people wore sleepers, very comfortable, nice and clean home shoes, not shoes that they wear outside... that is intolerable.
That's all. Thank you!
