YEREVAN (Armenpress)--President Serzh Sarkisian Tuesday appointed Lieutenant-General, Yuri Khachaturov as new chief of the staff of the Armenian armed forces and the first deputy defense minister.
Yuri Khachaturov served as deputy defense minister.
Sarkisian's press office said the new chief of the staff was promoted to the rank of Colonel-General.
Yuri Khachaturov was born in 1952 in Georgia. He is a graduate of a military academy in Moscow. He also served in Afghanistan with Soviet troops in 1985-1988 and was decorated with four military medals.
He has been serving for Armenian defense ministry since 1992. He is married and has three children.
Sarkisian also met Tuesday with army brass to introduce the new defense minister Seyran Ohanian.
The presidential press service quoted Serzh Sarkisian as saying that he has known Ohanian for 20 years and can not remember an act on his part that would be unworthy of an army officer. The president commended the new minister's contribution to establishment and strengthening of Armenian armed forces.
According Sarkisian, the army will continue to remain a priority for the government.
