YEREVAN (Armenpress)-The Armenian Government approved on Thursday a 4 year plan that aims to renovate Yerevan's Metro system, improve its overall operation and expand its network.
The plan also forecasts the metro system's expected earnings for the four-year period.
The plan was developed based on the findings of an inter-governmental agency set up by President Serzh Sarkisian when he was the Prime Minister, according to Yerevan Mayor Yervand Zakharian who presented the plan.
Yerevan's Metro system has not seen any serious investment since it was built in 1981, Zakharian said, adding that its equipment and machinery need urgent repair and in many cases replacement.
The 2008-2012 plan for the metro system outlines short, medium and long-term goals.
Zakharian said the Government has allocated 1. 7 billion drams for the urgent repair and maintenance. The mayor also explained that specialists from Armenia are currently studying the experience of other countries that utilize underground metro systems. The proposals on how to improve the work of the Yerevan Metro will be submitted to the government.
