GLENDALE--The Devidian & Mariamian Educational Foundation raised over 104,000 dollars toward enhancing and expanding its afterschool educational programs during its first annual telethon on Sunday.
The telethon, which saw over a dozen young students come out and volunteer their time to operate the phone banks, was hosted by Glendale City Clerk Ardashes Kassakhian, Araksia Varderesian, Dr. Evlin Baghdasarian, and Glendale Unified School Board President Greg Krikorian.
Also appearing as special guests during the telethon were, Burbank Mayor Marsha Ramos, Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian, LA County Sherrif Lee Baca, GUSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Escalante, as well as public school principles, vice principles, and teachers from the region.
“The Davidian and Mariamian Foundation helps educate the community about culture and history and helps keep our younger generation out of trouble,” said Kassakhian. “It's an investment that needs to be made for the betterment of our future.”
The Davidian & Mariamian Educational Foundation was established in 1987 as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality after-school programs that promote the high values of education and multi-culturalism.
The funds raised during the telethon will go toward the development of the foundation's current after school programs and courses, which are currently offered to thousands of Armenian-American students at over 26 public schools in Glendale and its surrounding cities.
The Davidian & Mariamian after school program has been recognized by parents, community members, teachers, principals, and local, state and Federal Government officials as an important step for building a strong community and keeping the children away from gangs, drugs, and violence.
