President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was planning to unleash military actions against Nagorno Karabakh prior the signing of the Armenia-Turkey Protocols, which was staved off due to a last-minute effort by the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT), writes local Turkish daily Hurriyet, citing an article in the local Azerbaijani daily Yeni Musafat.

"Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's plan to unleash military actions against Nagorno Karabakh was at the last minute prevented by MIT. The intervention by Turkey's National Intelligence Organization into Aliyev's plans took place about a year ago. Interestingly, it took place before the signing of the Protocols between Armenia Turkey in Switzerland. Turkey, by preventing Azerbaijan's plans, avoided failing the [normalization] process with Armenia and being discredited. The essence and the secret of the current tension between Baku and Ankara are related to that issue. The initiative by the ruling Justice and Development Party to normalize relations with Armenia would come to nought, should Azerbaijan have unleashed military actions that time," reads the article in Yeni Musavat.

Further the newspaper writes that today too Turkey will "stop" Azerbaijan, should it want to resolve the issue through military ways.

Citing its own sources in MIT, Hurriyet, in turn, writes that it will in no way make any comment on the publication which will make it impossible to find out the authenticity of what was said in the article.

In foreign affairs, usually the less that is said the better and the Azeris jiglistic, nationalist, rhetoric is politically divisive. Whilst the Azeris clearly view increased, Turko-Armenian reciprocation, as a threat to their national intrest. The reality is that Armenia's negotiating hand, as a hostile 'satellite' is far stronger geopolitically than that of Azerbaijan's.

The de-escalation of Azerbaijani and Armenian fictions and any resolution to what is in essence a territorial, dispute. Should not be completely intertwined with any normalization of Turkey's ties with Armenia either. As this obviously, bounds the fate of both the Turks and Armenians by the necks to the Azeris.

The Neo-Ottomanist, Davutoglu has a PhD in political science and is quite a interesting character.

For the citizens of Armenia, military service has became a torture, but not honor, deputy chairman of the committee of the Azerbaijani parliament said.

"In Armenia, the evasion from the military service and the facts of bullying are growing from year to year. There can be no question of patriotism and high military spirit. Weak financial provision of the Armenian army affects the level of the military spirit of the troops. Army was provided with old weapons, and food security is at a very poor level. Most of the funds allocated from the public budget for the army is appropriated in various stages," Aydin Mirzazade, chairman of the Azerbaijani parliamentary committee on security and defence told the website of the New Azerbaijan Party (NAP).

Armenia claims for the territory of other countries, conducts a policy of appropriating the culture and history of other states, Mirzazade said, adding that it replaces the policy of building a modern state to the militarist ideology, based on a medieval thought.

"Such a policy leads to a serious crisis and the deprivation of opportunities for development. Comparison of the power of Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the armies of two countries is in our favor," said the member of political council of the Azerbaijani ruling party.

Azerbaijani army is an example of state's power and pride of people, the MP said. "The Azerbaijani army is a structure with high preparedness, able to ensure the territorial integrity of State," said Mirzazade.

According to estimates of international centers for military research, the most prepared and modern army in the region is the army of Azerbaijan, said Mirzazade. "All these testify that the armed forces of Azerbaijan meet today's requirements. This fact is quite well known to Armenia, which has occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory and bases its policy on the occupation of neighboring states," said the MP.

its very accurate, i mean look at all the sources he gave to back up his claim. We all know Armenian soldiers are not well fed because there are no rape cases in the Armenian army but there are so many in the azeri army that it proves they are fed better.

'Armenia says it needs in time to withdraw its troops from Lachin and Kelbajar', Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Araz Azimov said.

'Armenia told Baku that it needs time to withdraw troops from a part of occupied territories of Azerbaijan', Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Special Representative of the President of Azerbaijan for the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict Araz Azimov told Public Television of Azerbaijan.

He also made comments on the conditions of opening the Turkish-Armenian borders.

'The Turkish-Armenian borders could be opened in the first stage only under the conditions of withdrawal of Armenian troops from five occupied regions of Azerbaijan and Lachin corridor. It will create conditions for Turkish-Armenian cooperation, as well as trilateral trade relations between Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia. Rejecting all these conditions Armenia lost everything. Armenia can lose good prospects because of political views of president Sargsyan or anyone else'.

Azimov said there should be suitable conditions for returning of Azerbaijanis to Nagorno Karabakh and living together with Armenians there, giving temporary status to them, as well as beginning of economic restoration by the Government of Azerbaijan there. The deputy minister said it was impossible in present time and added that it needs to restore the Constitution of Azerbaijan in Nagorno Karabakh and the status should be determined within the Constitution and coordinated with the local people.

'It should be carried out phase-by-phase. The regions of Aghdam, Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Zangilan, Gubadli and Lachin corridor must be liberated. Armenia says it needs in time to withdraw its troops from Lachin and Kelbajar. This time should be scheduled. The co-chairs have a proposal on this issue. It needs to schedule not only the withdrawal from Lachin and Kelbajar, but also for returning of Azerbaijanis to Karabakh. When they will return and will they receive status by returning? The liberation of five regions + Lachin corridor should be legalized with same document'.

Regarding the replacing of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries, Azimov said this issue was not on agenda in present time.

Novruz Mammadov notorious for absurd statements

Head of the Azerbaijani presidential staff Novruz Mammadov is notorious for absurd statements. He is a political figure that has exhausted his potential and is trying to remind the public of himself in any way possible, Hovhannes Sahakyan, a Parliament member of the Prosperous Party of Armenia (PAP), told NEWS.am, commenting on Mammadov’s statement that Armenia allegedly asked for time to vacate Lachin and Kelbajar.

He pointed out that the information on the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the regions is false. Sahakyan added that Nagorno-Karabakh will never be part of Azerbaijan. “Moreover, Azerbaijan must leave the territories it occupied, including Shahumyan, for several hundreds of Armenian refugees to settle down there. It is not until that time that any concessions on Armenia’s part can be discussed,” he said.

NEWS.am reminds readers that Novruz Mammadov stated that Armenia allegedly asked for time to vacate Lachin and Kelbajar and the process had allegedly been worked out by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs.

Baku refuted information that Ankara prevented hostilities in Karabakh

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Turkey Zakir Hashimov refuted information spread by Yeni Musavat newspaper that Turkish National Intelligence Organization prevented the alleged military operation in Karabakh.

Ambassador said that journalists write about their dreams. “There is no such a thing. This information raised laughter in Baku,” Hashimov noted.
According to Yeni Musavat, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev decided to launch military operation in Karabakh after Protocols were signed last October, though MIT took certain measures and talked Aliyev out of doing it.

Hakan Tekin, the young and inexperienced Turkish Consul General in Los Angeles, is trying hard to earn brownie points with his bosses in Ankara by countering any reference to Armenians in the U.S. media. He went overboard last week by sending an offensive letter to the Los Angeles Times.

Tekin was displeased with Patt Morrison's interview with me published by the Times in its op-ed page on April 24. The article was titled, "Harut Sassounian: True to the Past."

In his brief letter, Consul General Tekin made several misjudgments. The first was to criticize the L.A. Times' Pulitzer-Prize winning veteran journalist Patt Morrison, alleging that there were "many misleading elements" in her interview, without naming a single one.

Judging from the text of the Consul General's letter, it was probably drafted by one of the many American public relations firms hired by the Turkish government at great cost. While the words may have been written by Americans, the thoughts are definitely those of a Turkish denialist! P.R. firms don't really care how silly their letters sound, as long as their employer is satisfied and compensates them handsomely. Here is a piece of free advice that the Turkish government and the Consul General should keep in mind before taking on again the free press in a free country: "Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel."

Tekin is behaving as if he is still in Turkey, where the media is routinely suppressed by such fascist tactics as throwing journalists in jail or physically eliminating them. He is vainly trying to import Turkey's undemocratic "gag rule" into the United States by trying to silence the L.A. Times!

The Consul General goes on to attack me for the photograph that accompanies the L.A. Times article, in which I am holding the picture of my grandmother "garlanded with a bandolier of bullets." I am very proud of grandma Gadar, because at a time when more than a million Armenians were being marched to their deaths by the genocidal rulers of Tekin's ancestors, she and her fellow Zeitountsis -- men, women and children -- defended themselves valiantly and refused to be slaughtered like sheep. Had she not fought to save her life, I would not have existed today, which may have made the Consul General happier! Is Tekin upset that the Turkish government was unable to finish the job of exterminating every last Armenian?

Consul General Tekin then criticizes me for my "relentless opposition" to the infamous Armenia-Turkey Protocols. He has no one else to blame than his own government for not ratifying these Protocols which have been collecting dust in the Turkish Parliament for more than six months. Armenians are indeed fortunate that Turkey's leaders have inadvertently protected Armenia's national interests by not ratifying the Protocols, so that they could extract more concessions from the Armenian government!

Incredibly, Tekin ends his pathetic letter by admonishing me to be more like William Saroyan, who he claims was "compassionate" toward Turks! May I remind the Turkish Consul of Saroyan's well-known statement castigating the Turks for having destroyed Armenia and its people. Here is the original version of that quotation, as it was published in Inhale & Exhale, New York: Random House, 1936: "Go ahead, destroy this race. Let us say that it is again 1915. There is war in the world. Destroy Armenia. See if you can do it. Send them from their homes into the desert. Let them have neither bread nor water. Burn their houses and their churches. See if they will not live again. See if they will not laugh again. See if the race will not live again when two of them meet in a beer parlor, twenty years after, and laugh, and speak in their tongue. Go ahead, see if you can do anything about it. See if you can stop them from mocking the big ideas of the world, you sons of xxxxxes, a couple of Armenians talking in the world, go ahead and try to destroy them."

Could it be that the Turkish Consul General is trying to denigrate me, because I have rejected his repeated invitations to get together, and his persistent attempts to co-opt me? If it is any consolation for this novice diplomat, I have not been tricked by his superiors either, who are far more experienced than him in the art of fishing for Armenian collaborators!

New website on Azerbaijan's occupied Shusha

A new website My Shusha. My Azerbaijan (www.myshusha.wordpress.com) was launched on 8 May by the Ireli public union.

The site brings together a wealth of information about the historic Azerbaijani city of Shusha, revered as a cradle of the arts in Azerbaijan. Material on the site is in three languages, Azerbaijani, English and Russian.

The fall of Shusha to Armenian armed forces on 8 May 1992 was a turning point in the Karabakh war. In the occupation of the city, 480 civilians died, 600 were wounded, 22,000 lost their homes and 68 people were captured by Armenian forces. Their fate is not known. Religious and historic monuments and museums in the city were badly damaged or destroyed.

Aggressive policy of nomads key factor of the Azerbaijani army defeat in the Karabakh war
Only the UN has the right to speak of an “aggressor state”, rather than the politicians in Baku who did not find anything better than to complain about the whole world.

No matter what the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the interested parties say about settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, we must admit that the process is frozen, if not permanently, then at least for the following five years. The point is not the willingness or unwillingness to regulate the conflict, i.e. determine the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, but the growing uncertainty of Baku. No statements calculated for the Azerbaijani or the Armenian audience produced the effect they were intended to.

PanARMENIAN.Net - The “boogeyman stories” circulated in the Azeri media about the power and determination of the Azerbaijani army remained “unapprehended” by the Armenian side. Celebrating this year the 18th anniversary of liberation of Shoushi, Armenian people once again reminded Baku about the old truth: war is a matter of skill and not quantity. And skill is exactly what the Azerbaijani army lacks. You may buy the most modern weapons, call up all the fighting population of the country, but still lose, because it is necessary to learn to properly shoot even from a gun and go into the battle with confidence that you are defending for your homeland. Azerbaijan has neither the first nor the second. But when the remaining sober heads in the neighboring republic say that the key factor of the Azerbaijani army defeat was that the army fought a war of aggression, they are declared to be enemies and traitors. In the second Karabakh war, if it ever starts, Azerbaijan will not be able to attract any mercenaries: Chechen commanders are busy with their own survival, the notion of “Islamic solidarity” is not applied for the neighboring republic, which, by the way, has aroused the complaint of Baku politicians. Complaints are mainly directed to the member-states of Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which not only “do not support the just demands of Azerbaijan and do not condemn the aggressor”, but also make friends with the latter. In this regard it must be reminded that the term “aggressor” can be used only by the United Nations Organization. Only the UN has the right to speak of an “aggressor state”, rather than the politicians in Baku who did not find anything better than to complain about the whole world.

Reverting to the issue of mercenaries, let us note that now it will be harder to attract women-snipers their folks know quite well how they paid for the dead Armenians. Not to mention the Ukrainian “volunteer” pilots... However, Safar Abiyev assures that the Azerbaijani army itself will cope with the “occupants”. But it’s his business, however. Blessed are those who believe.

And now floods of tears and lamentations will be poured by May 9, and Akif Nagi will go on his next tour to Karabakh. The other day the board meeting of the Karabakh Liberation Organization (KLO) decided to celebrate May 8 as the "Day of hatred towards invaders". According to the decision, along with other activities there are to be organized visits to Martyrs’ Alley in Baku and its regions, burning of the Armenian flag and photographs of her leaders, etc. KLO considers that expressing particular hatred towards the occupiers on this day is appropriate due to the fact that Shoushi “is the symbol of Karabakh and one of the oldest and richest places of Azerbaijani culture”. It would be funny if it were not so sad. Azeri military experts who lost the war will say that the Armenians do not know how to fight, that they achieved victory by Russian assistance, and other such childish prattle. But actually in the operation “Wedding in the mountains” two and a half thousand soldiers were involved from the Azerbaijani side and approximately the same number from Armenia. About 100 people were killed from the Armenian side, while Azerbaijan lost about 700.

At the time of assault, military commander of Shoushi was Elbrus Orujev, while the operation was planned and put into practice by Arkadi Ter-Tadevosyan (Commandos) from the Armenian side. The storm began at 2:30, on 8 May. A large military contingent was present on the open road to the west of Shoushi. The soldiers were ordered not to shoot at people fleeing from the city, but block the access to the city for reinforcement. In the evening the Azeri army thought they had repulsed the attack of Armenians. It was then that most of the soldiers ran off and Orujev did not have enough people to continue the fight. He gave an order to retreat. Among those who left Shoushi last was Chechen fighter Samil Basayev.

It was with the liberation of Shoushi that the NKR Defense Army was formed, which is one of the most mobile and capable armies in the region today. And no matter our neighboring republic likes it or not, such is the reality.

According to a veteran of the war, entering the liberated towns, they saw that these towns remained in normal condition.

"I asked the population of these cities about information we talked at school that the Germans burn, loot and destroy occupied cities. I can see that none of these buildings has no bullet holes. Local people said that the German army simply went away.

I want to say that they did not attack innocent civilians. They punished only those waging a guerrilla war. Pay attention to the difference between Nazi Germany and Armenia. Armenians have destroyed the population of the occupied Azerbaijani towns and destroyed the towns. Khojaly and Agdam towns and all other territories under occupation are an example of this. People do not live on the lands occupied by Armenians. The walls and stones of these towns are removed.

Armenian Nazis committed atrocities that are much worse than atrocities of Hitler's Nazis."
