They welcome the move by the Azerbaijani Government to set up a special working group to investigate the murder of Rafiq Tagi and call on the Azerbaijan authorities to ensure that the investigation is thorough and effective, and that perpetrators are prosecuted and brought to justice in a trial which meets international fair trial standards. At the same time, Azerbaijani authorities must to do their utmost to protect the life and safety of Samir Sadagatoglu.
MEPs finally insist that threats and incitement to violence against individuals expressing views deemed ‘offensive’ by some adherents of religions and beliefs systems are “totally unacceptable,” that those responsible for such threats and incitement must be prosecuted, and that the freedom of expression and safety of the threatened individuals must be fully guaranteed,” the resolution reads.

The statements by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev that the capital of Armenia is built on ancient Azerbaijani lands cause panic among Armenians.
The statement came from chief of the sector in department of public-political issues of presidential administration Fuad Akhundov.
“President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has been raising the issue that the modern Yerevan was constructed on Azerbaijani lands since 2006, which causes panic among Armenians”, Akhundov told a presentation of the historical and analytical internet portal www.erevangala500.com on the 500th anniversary of the Irevan fortress (modern Yerevan-the capital of modern Armenia).
“Naturally, the fact that the 500th anniversary of construction of the Irevan fortress and the 50th jubilee of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev (to be market on Saturday) are marked on the same day is the coincidence. But I personally evaluate this as a symbolical sign, since for the first time this issue was raised by the head of the state”, representative of the presidential administration said, Interfax-Azerbaijan reports.
He noted that people who visited Yerevan say that there are no historical monuments in Yerevan. “There are historical parts, fortresses and cultural monuments in Baku and Tbilisi. But Armenia lacks such monuments because Armenian vandals destroyed all”, he said.
Akhundov noted that creation of Yerevan on historical Azerbaijani lands is proven by most historical documents. In this view he drew the analogy between the destiny of the Irevan fortress and Italian Pompey. According to him, Pompey is the only city which did not change the image for about two centuries since it was left under cinder after volcano eruption. Meanwhile, the digging is held accurately, since Italians value their ancient history.
“However, Yerevan can be considered the only city of this kind, who has completely changed its image. In other words, Armenians left nothing of previous image of Yerevan. Demolition of ancient buildings in this city, particularly, intensified after the 1960’s”, he said.
According to Akhundov, such an attitude to the ancient buildings of Yerevan was connected with the fact that ‘there were the architectural elements alien to Armenians and they committed the acts of vandalism”.
The representative of the presidential administration of Azerbaijan also noted that the same way Armenians misappropriate the Albanian heritage of Azerbaijan in the occupied lands of Nagorno Karabakh”.
Armenians call the Ganzasar monastery the Notre Dame of Karabakh and consider it the Armenian monastery of the ancient times. However, in fact this monastery is built by Albanian tsar Hasan Jalal. This is proven by the book of famous Soviet scientist Joseph Orbeli “Legends of Ganzasar” issued in 1919 amid the Armenian-Azerbaijani confrontation. Event takes place on 500th anniversary of Erivan fortress

An event on the 500th anniversary of Erivan fortress was held on the initiative of Caucasus and Asia Minor Center of Azer Global Institute for Socio-Political Studies.
Head of the center Shalala Hasanova said Erivan fortress is the history of Azerbaijan and all facts prove that these territories belong to us, APA reports.
“President Ilham Aliyev has also repeatedly said that Erivan and the present territories of the entire Armenia belonged to the Azerbaijanis,” she said.
Hasanova said the portal www.erivangala500.com covers detailed information about Erivan.
Video about the history of Iravan and the facts proving that the fortress belong to Azerbaijan was demonstrated. The video showed that the city of Iravan was destroyed by Armenians, Turkish, Muslim monuments were destroyed and modern buildings were constructed. The video also presented the speech made by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan during the visit of Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev proving that the ancient fortress existed in this city.
The e-version of the book “Gandzasar manuscripts” by Armenian historian Orbeli was also demonstrated at the event. It was noted that shortly after the book was published, it was suppressed. Groundlessness of Armenia’s history in the book was shown as the reason for it.

According to today’s Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan got into a shouting match and briefly scuffled during a December 19 Kremlin reception marking the 20th anniversary of the CIS.
The paper says that according to informed sources, Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev exchanged words during an awards ceremony during which a representative from each nation was to receive a decoration.
When it came for Armenia’s representative, Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan, to get his award, Ilham Aliyev is reported to have voiced his opposition and Kocharyan returned empty handed.
Soon after, Aliyev is said to have scolded Sargsyan for nominating Kocharyan to receive the award, arguing that Kocharyan’s public criticism of the Baku government was hurting the Karabakh peace process.
Sargsyan is said to have responded in kind, telling Aliyev that negotiations were being hindered by people in his own government.
The two leaders allegedly then rose from the table, pushed each other, and assumed a “fighting stance”.
It was only after President Dmitry Medvedyev stepped in that Sargsyan and Aliyev sat down.
The newspaper says that Aliyev then started to gnaw his teeth and threatened Sargsyan with the words, ‘Mark my words, I ain’t finished with you’.

15 families declare hunger strike in Azerbaijan

BAKU. – The societal discontent has reached its peak in the regions of Azerbaijan. Specifically, 15 families in the country’s Masali region declared a hunger strike in protest against Gezenfer Aghayev, head of the region’s public intellectual’s union. The protest had begun on December 18, but the number of hunger strikers is growing, Yeni Musavat newspaper of Azerbaijan writes, adding that one-hundred more families could soon join this hunger strike.
“The hunger strikers informed that ever since assuming the region’s leadership, Gezenfer Aghayev is busy with collecting money. The residents even petitioned the president, but no attention was paid to the complaints,” Yeni Musavat writes.
