Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

I cannot find the exact reference, however there are not many types of Russian fighters in service.
If you can point to a single engined fighter among them I will withdraw my statement.

    Good luck.

    .
First you must understand what "Grounded" mean. It is a condition that the aircraft is not airworthy.....meaning certain maintenance issues have grounded the aircraft and it has been removed from service until such time it can be safely return to service. Since Russia, like you said, does not like single engine fighters that does not mean single engine aircraft are automatically grounded. Some Russian trainers are single engine and we have a few. US top fighters are single engine like the F-16, stealth fighter F117, and the new F-35.

Now with that said, is twin engine aircraft better than single engine (one is good two is better).....not necessarily. Multi-engine aircraft require more pilot attention and an engine failure could occupy the pilot to a point of overload depending on pilot training and experience. In single engine aircraft the decision is made for you if you loose the engine, you are going down. There are many examples of pilots loosing an engine in twin aircraft and they end up crashing because of lack of proper training and complacency.

Single engine aircraft are as reliable as multi-engine aircraft. The design dictates the mission of the aircraft.

          Thank you for your explanation.

Maybe I was using wrong terminology.

I was only quoting a source which refereed to Russian air force policy.

I had not participation in the decision making !!!!

Policies may be formulated based on anticipated results as well as actual historical data.

This only referred Russian air force.

I do not know a lot about the aircraft world but in the marine environment two engines are a must when making long voyages. The main reason you want two engines is that if one goes out you still have the other.

Russian 102nd military base in Armenia prepares for large-scale exercises

Armed forces intelligence units of the Russian 102nd military base in Armenia started their preparations for large-scale tactical military exercises to be held in Armenia’s Alagyaz and Kamkhud training complexes in mid-July.

The scenario of the exercises includes transferring paratrooper units behind the enemy lines by Mi-24P attack, and Mi-8MT transport helicopters in extreme conditions on high altitude during both day and night. The flights are to be carried out covertly.

In addition to the Mig-29 fighter jets, infantry, artillery, and tank units of the Russian 102nd military base are to take part as well.

The exercises will be led by the commander of the southern military region of the Russian Armed Forces.

I will try to explain without getting too off topic and complicated.

When you loose an engine in two engine aircraft you loose 75% of your performance. Lets take your two engine boat example. Assuming the engines are sitting next to each other and the centerline of the boat runs smack between them. If you loose one engine, you will notice a dramatic drop in speed. You try to restart the engine but it is not working. The dead engine propeller is still in the water causing alot of drag and you notice that you have to apply opposite rudder to maintain heading. The water now wants to turn the propeller of the dead engine. So you pull the dead engine out of the water. performance gets better and rudder force decreases. Your speed now its less than half of what you were having with two engine because now you are carrying dead weight of the dead engine. The force of the good engine is not at the centerline of the boat so you must still apply rudder to keep straight.

Same concept in aircraft but aircraft need to climb. At take off your airspeed is low so you got to react fast. In cruise you have time to identify which engine quite, troubleshoot, and secure the engine (if popeller driven then feather the prop). Now you must maintain Vmc (minimum control airspeed) or the torque of the good engine, the drag of the bad engine will flip you upside down or cause you to run out of rudder to maintain directional control. Now aircraft need to climb. If you single engine performance is maintaining 5000ft and you are taking off from a density altitude of 6000ft or you have mountains in front of you above 5000 ft you won't make it. Throw in night flight and bad weather and a bad situation can become worst very quick.

This is why fighter aircraft have their engines close to the fuselage (less arm to act on) and they carry two tails. Also the section that the wing meets the fuselage is blended in for extra lift.
