YEREVAN. – About 200 Armenian peacekeepers are currently serving in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Lebanon, Commander of the peacekeeping brigade, Major-General Arthur Simonyan said at the press conference on Monday devoted to the International Day of Peacekeepers.
Major General presented the history of creation of the peacekeeping brigade, mentioned their participation in the events aimed to increase readiness of the Armed Forces. He also noted the high assessment of the level of training of the Armenian peacekeepers given by NATO and its member states.
“Professionals know what it means,” Simonyan noted.
Artur Simonyan said that large exercises are scheduled for July. Training of field hospital doctors and sappers will be held after the drills. Two exercises will be held on the territory of Armenia, while two others in Germany and Kazakhstan.
Armenia is participating in peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, Iraq (2005-2008), Afghanistan, Lebanon (panning to increase the number of peacekeepers), has observers in Lebanon and Mali.
According to Simonyan, Armenian peacekeepers in Afghanistan managed to neutralize two dangerous terrorists.
“I want to note that each of our peacekeepers is not just a serviceman, he is also an ambassador representing the culture and traditions of Armenia”, he noted.
