What: Conference Titled "International Relations and Balance of Power in the Caucasus: Foreign Policy of the Second Armenian Republic"

Where: Glendale Central Public Library located at 222 E. Harvard Street, Glendale, CA 91205
Unified Young Armenians, a California 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization invites you to take part in a conference titled "International Relations and Balance of Power in the Caucasus: Foreign Policy of the Second Armenian Republic." The goal of this event is to give the outstanding Armenian youth a forum through which they can openly discuss their ideas in regards to various Armenian related issues ranging from the Armenian Genocide, to Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), etc. It is important to note that this event is exclusively organized and run by the youth and will be conducted in English. While the conference will be covering a period of over 20 years (roughly 1988-2008), the main focus of this event will be the recent developments in the Armenian-Turkish relations. The event will include a 15 minute factual presentation on the period in question in the beginning of the conference.
The specific topics discussed will include but are not limited to:
a. Armenian Complementary Foreign Policy: A Balancing Act Between West and Russia*
-Russo-Armenian Military Alliance and Dependence of Armenia on Russia (Especially in the Field of Energy and Infrastructure)
i. Reliable Ally or Undisputed Master?
-US-Armenian Cooperation within the Frameworks of NATO and in Particular in its Partnership for Peace Program
i. Millennium Challenge Fund $235 million (USD) in Aid plus over $1 billion (USD) since Independence
i. US Elections and Consequences a. Armenian Turkish Relations*
-Soccer Diplomacy: Successes and Failures
i. What is there to gain/lose?
-Domestic Scene and Policy Making Implications
-Proposal to Create an Independent Commission on the Armenian Genocide
-Role of Azerbaijan, its Interests and its Bargaining Mechanisms
b. Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Conflict
-Turkey and Artsakh*
i. What are Turkish Interests in the Conflict?
-Negotiation within the Framework of Minsk Group (Headed by US, Russia, and France)
-Optimal and Possible Solutions versus Acceptable and Realistic Solutions
-Azerbaijani Threats of Military Solution to the Conflict
-External Factors such as CSTO, NATO, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline, Nabucco Gas Pipeline, Turkey, Russo-Georgian Conflict
c. Russo-Georgian Conflict
-The Lessons Learned: Growing or Waning Regional Importance of Armenia?
-Implications for Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh): Abkhazian and Ossetian Independence as a Precedent
d. US-Iranian Conflict
-Armenian-Iranian Economic Cooperation
-US Pressures and Economic Sanctions versus Iran
-Military Conflict: Role and Implications for the Neighbors
