Aluanism
Aluanism is a movement for the use of the Aluan ethnonym among the aboriginal peoples of Dagestan and northern Azerbaijan, those who belong to the so-called Dagestani branch of Northeast Caucasian ethnolinguistic group. The movement rejects the use of Dagestan in favour of Aluania, which is the name of the ancient country more commonly referred to in Western literature as Caucasian Albania.
The term Aluan is restricted to a member of the ethnic group while an Aluanian would be any citizen/resident of Aluania of any ethnicity. This civic distinction is emphasised by Aluanists so as not to exclude or alienate the non-Aluan peoples of the northeast Caucasus from their cause, be those non-Aluans Russians Slavs, Caucasian Chechens, Iranic Tats or Turkic Kumyks and Azeris.
Beyond a revival of the Aluan ethnonym, Aluanists also seek a unification of the territories in which they reside, Dagestan and the northern portion of Azerbaijan, into a single autonomous unit, Aluania, ideally federated to Russia. In this regard, Aluanism is a broader, more universal and inclusive movement than Lezgin nationalism, which calls for a unification only of those Azerbaijani and Dagestani regions populated by Lezgins. A unified Aluania is regarded as essential in ensuring the survival of Azerbaijan's indigenous Dagestani Caucasians - the Udis, Tsakhur, Budukh and Kryz - in the face of massive assimilation pressures and discrimination from the Azeri authorities.
