  • Is this the end of the Diaspora?

Is October 10th 2009 the end of Diaspora? Up to that date the relationship between Armenians and Turkey was led and defined by the Diaspora and the government of Armenia did not have much to do or say in that regard.

Now the regime in Armenia has taken the lead from the hands of the Diaspora as far as relations with Turkey and has pushed aside the Diaspora.

So again, what is the role of the Diaspora now? Is there anything left for it to do?

        Eddo211,

You are the ignorant one who doesn't see that times are changing, that by taking the lead in defining the relations between Armenia and Turkey, the government of Armenia has taken the one issue that defined and unified the Diaspora, that gave the Diaspora it's unifying identity.

It is high time that Armenians in the Diaspora start thinking about moving and settling in Armenia so that they can remain Armenians and contribute to the existence and survival of the Armenian nation. That, my friend, is not going to happen in the Diaspora.

Had we spent resources in making the Diaspora stronger rather than handing money to politicians, we would have taken a great deal of North America over by now. Our communities would have been stronger and our ideals kept intact. Western Armenians moving to Armenia would be like another assimilating process. We have already proven that Armenians should never all be at the same place at the same time.

That means that it's not easy to just pick up and move after spending generation(s) rebuilding where you've settled.

No it doesn't mean that. You meant "Western Armenians getting assimilated in Armenia". How? And what have you exactly built there?

Schools, churches, communities. Crunch the numbers, there are more in the Diaspora than there are in Armenia. Those things don't develop overnight... if they did, the Armenians in Armenia would all be living a higher standard of living by now. I didn't say getting assimilated, I said it would be "like getting assimilated". You know very well that it takes a lot of work to pick up and start a new life elsewhere... especially when the majority have already spent money and time on education for their kids and have a future where ever they have settled.
