Weapon exported by UK 'fall into Daesh hands'

    News | 09.12.2015 | 00:08

PressTV - A new report has revealed that Daesh (ISIL) terrorists may be using weapons exported to the Middle East by the UK.

According to a research study by human rights organization Amnesty International, assault weapons and small arms sent from Britain to Iraq following the 2003 US-led invasion may have ended up in the hands of ISIL Takfiri terrorists.

Analyzing thousands of videos and images, the report has concluded that Daesh terrorists have obtained a “substantial arsenal” of arms and ammunition.

The weapons have been made in more than 25 countries.

US military issue M16 rifles, Austrian and Russian sniper rifles and Chinese and Belgian machine guns are also among the weapons being used by the terrorists.

The report says majority of the weapons acquired by the Takfiri terrorists have been given to Iraqi security forces by different Western countries between 2003 and 2007.

“Decades of free-flowing arms into Iraq meant that when IS (Daesh) took control of these areas, they were like children in a sweetshop. The fact that countries including the UK have ended up inadvertently arming IS should give us pause over current weapons deals,” the Independent quoted Oliver Sprague, Amnesty UK’s arms programme director as saying on Tuesday.

“Risks need to be far more carefully calculated, and we shouldn’t wait for this worst case scenario to happen before acting to prevent sales of arms which could fuel atrocities,” he added.

Now, some critics say that the UK should stop arms deals with the Persian Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia.

They argue that the arms could get into the hands of Daesh terrorists at the end of the day.

    Using weapons against innocents

A London-based political commentator says Saudi Arabia has already been using weapons supplied by the UK in the invasion of Yemen.

“In regards with Yemen, British arms were playing central role in the conflict and we also know that children have been targeted by phosphorous bomb by the Saudis,” Clive Hambidge told Press TV on Tuesday.

UK is Saudi Arabia’s largest arms supplier, “responsible for 36% of all Saudi arms imports,” the report said.

Since the Conservatives came to power in 2010, UK has licensed nearly four billion pounds of arms sales to Riyadh and some 240 military staff and civil servants from the UK Ministry of Defense work both in UK and the kingdom to support the contracts. The latest of military contracts includes delivery of 22 British Hawk jets which is worth £1.6 billion.

Moreover, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), a government department working with UK-based businesses to assist their success in international markets, has played a major role in encouraging those companies that sell security equipment to target Saudi Arabia for selling their products.

NATO May Not Back Turkey in a War With Russia

      Column: Politics

      Region: Middle East

      Country: Syria

45345344The Shoot down of the Su-24 was not about an airspace violation. Discussion about how many seconds the Russian Jet was inside Turkish Airspace, or how many warnings the Turkish military gave the Jet are largely irrelevant. In 2012, Turkish president Erdogan himself said, that brief airspace violations can’t be a pretext for attack. Turkey violated Greek airspace over 2000 times last year. US president, Obama hinted the real agenda behind Turkey was to protect Al-Qaeda linked Turkman insurgents in Syria, but this is also a secondary objective. The real agenda behind shooting down the jet is challenging Russia’s resolve on Syria and testing its position as a superpower on the world stage. This agenda belongs the US and not Turkey. A Challenge of Russia’s strength must be met in a way which would send a clear message to the West, that it is no longer a unipolar world and Russia is here to stay.

      Russian Retaliation

To emphasise the importance of meeting a test of resolve, the wider implication of a “do nothing” response must be understood. While it’s tempting to dismiss the attack on an Su-24 (and later, a Mi-24 helicopter) as an isolated incident that is not worth escalating over, such an attack is usually only the first of a series of attacks. A decision not to strike back implies weakness and lack of resolve, which invites further attacks in future.

So far Russia has kept its retaliation in the economic and political spheres, placing Turkey under comprehensive sanctions. The political retaliation was also swift and strong. The Russian Embassy in Turkey was shut down signaled the end of relations between the two countries. The words coming out of the Russian government were equally strong, pointing Turkish President Erdogan out as a supporter of terrorism and a financier of ISIS.

But economic and political warfare could be a lead up to future military action. The installment of the Russian S-400 Anti-Air missiles in Syria, has effectively created a no-fly zone over Turkey. Turkey has grounded its air force for fear of retaliatory strikes from the the S-400. Russia has also begun striking at insurgent supply lines directly on the Turkey-Syria border crossing. Russia’s decision to speak openly about Turkey’s support of terrorist groups in Syria, could be establish a grounds for future to attacks against Terrorist targets within Turkish Territory.

With such grave possibilities, why would Turkey carry out such an attack? Turkey may have been gambled that Russia would not retaliate militarily, assuming that threatening to close the Bosphorus strait, and having NATO backing would be enough of a deterrent. But Can NATO backing be relied upon?

NATO May Not Back Turkey in a War With Russia.

Over a month before the attack, NATO’s Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg made strong statements promising that NATO would defend Turkey against any threats. These statements were made after Russia passed through Turkish Airspace on its way to bomb targets in Syria. However, In the wake of the Shoot down of the Jet Stoltenberg statements were far weaker and non-committal. When asked directly if NATO would step in to defend Turkey if Russia retaliates, Stoltenberg side stepped the question, and spoke about the need for dialogue and de-escalation.

Q (Kurdish media): Mr Stoltenberg, how could be the situation and your position if tension between Russia and Turkey raised? You said that you are continue looking at developments. How could be your position if tensions continue to rise between Russia and Turkey? Thank you.

Secretary General: I’ve think I’ve expressed very clearly that we are calling for calm and de-escalation. This is a serious situation. This is a situation which calls on that we all are prudent and that we all contribute to de-escalating the situation.

And that’s also the reason why I welcome further contacts between Moscow and Ankara.

Even though NATO’s collective defence treaty says that member states must defend against threats, it is not assured that NATO would step in to protect Turkey militarily in a war with Russia. When Syria shot down a Turkish Jet in 2012, NATO did not agree to back Turkey in a war with Syria. A war with Russia, a nuclear power, would be far more destructive than a war with Syria. Despite Turkey’s appeal, both the US and Germany pulled their of Patriot missiles out of Turkey even after Russia had crossed into Turkish airspace on its way to the Syrian theatre. The US is happy to use Turkish proxies to do the dirty work, but would rather continue to avoid a direct conflict with Russia. NATO member states also have very conflicting position on where they stand with relation to Russia, with some having far more to lose than Turkey if Russian ties are not maintained. As a result there is potential that NATO might break the code of its alliance.

That is not to say that Turkey isn’t a significant country in the NATO Alliance. Turkey was, formerly the heart of the Ottoman empire which still holds a very strategic position as the gateway between near East, Europe, the Caucasus and the Balkans. It has been the tip of NATO’s sword since the inception of the alliance. If NATO wavers in its support of Turkey it might end in the breakup of NATO. The intention of the Su-24 may have been to test Russia strength, but it may end up testing NATO, and revealing it is weakness.

Iraqi parliament defense committee calls to review & cancel security agreement with US - MP

The Iraqi parliament's Security and Defense Committee has called for a review and cancelation of the agreement with Washington on security, a committee member has stated.

Iraq needs either to overhaul the terms of the agreement on security or annul it, Hamid Mutlak, an Iraqi Parliamentarian and member of the Defense and Security Committee told Sputnik.

“The [Iraqi] government and the parliament need to be review its security agreement with the US, because Washington is not serious about its implementation. We will demand its cancelation,” Mutlak stated.

He also commented on the deployment of the Turkish troops in Iraq.

"Iraq will be defended only by its sons, but Turkey will withdraw [its troops], since the land of Iraq is sacred, and its sovereignty is a red line. We have a right to give this issue an international character and to demand from the UN Security Council the withdrawal of Turkish troops," he said.

Recent media reports of Turkish troops deploying to a base near the Islamic State-held city of Mosul created a stir in Baghdad. Although Turkey maintains that the troops were part of a training mission coordinated with the Iraqi officials, Iraq's Prime Minister Haider Abadi said on Sunday that if Ankara did not withdraw its troops within 48 hours, Baghdad would take the matter to the UN Security Council.

US Defense Secretary Ash Carter added fuel to the fire when he recently stated that the US military would deploy a new special operations force to Iraq.

"Iraq does not need foreign ground forces and the Iraqi government is committed not to allow the presence of any ground force on Iraqi land," Abadi replied in a statement.

Hadi Amiri, the head of one of Iraq's most powerful Shiite militias, the Badr Organization, warned that any US base in Iraq would be then considered a "target," AP reported.

There are currently some 3,500 US troops in Iraq on a training and support mission designed to help Iraqi forces fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The Iraqi parliament's Security and Defense committee plans to ask for cooperation with Russia in carrying out airstrikes against IS, another member of the committee, Iskander Watut, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"Soon, a meeting [of the committee] with Prime Minister Haider Abadi will be held, at which we will propose cooperating with Russia in carrying out airstrikes against IS and in the fight against terrorism in Iraq," he stated.

              Israeli Commandos Rescue Al-Nusra Terrorists
              BY PAUL ANTONOPOULOS
              DECEMBER 10, 2015

The Al-Nusra Front, Syria’s Al-Qaeda branch, who are the dominant opposition force along the Syria-Israel border have confirmed its collaboration with Israel. Although non-mainstream have been reporting on this collaboration for at least three years, on Tuesday, the Daily Mail exposed a video of Israeli commandos entering Syrian territory to rescue several wounded Al-Nusra militants and retreating to aid the terrorists within Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Al-Nusra Front are a designated terrorist groups by the United States, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Russia among many others.

The report revealed that Israel have saved the lives of at least 2000 militants at the cost of $13 million. Although Israel have limited their involvement in the Syrian war to airstrikes against Syrian government and Hezbollah positions, this new action shows direct cooperation with them and Islamist forces.

Press TV claim that the Syrian army has repeatedly seized huge quantities of Israeli-made weapons and advanced military equipment from the foreign-backed militants inside Syria.

Israel insists that the dangerous operations are humanitarian efforts, and that it hopes to “win hearts and minds” in Syria.

ISIS Recaptures Maheen After Launching a Massive Counter-Offensive
                BY LEITH FADEL
                DECEMBER 10, 2015

On Wednesday morning in the Homs Governorate’s eastern countryside, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a large-scale counter-offensive at the village of Maheen in order to recover several points lost to the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) and their allies over the last three weeks.

ISIS began their assault at the Quraytayn-Maheen checkpoint, where they confronted a large contingent from the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Sadad; this firefight resulted in the terrorist group taking control of the checkpoint and the corresponding hill that overlooks the ancient Syriac Christian city of Quraytayn.

Following the capture of the Quraytayn-Maheen checkpoint, the ISIS forces would seize two more hilltops along the Maheen-Quraytayn Road after a fierce battle with the National Defense Forces and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party.

As a result of these gains, ISIS was able to reenter Maheen and retake the town after a violent battle with the Syrian Social Nationalist Party and the National Defense Forces.

The Syriac Christian city of Sadad is once again threatened by ISIS after they captured the neighboring town of Maheen.

Recently, Syrian Arab Army’s 120th Brigade of the 2nd Division and the Assyrian “Gozarto Protection Forces” (GPF) left the Maheen-Quraytayn front to return to their posts – the departure of these troops has paved the way for ISIS to counter.

ERDOGAN SENDS 'GREY WOLVES' TO RUSSIAN BORDERS

                  Wed Dec 09, 2015 10:27

TEHRAN (FNA)- Ukrainian nationalists and activists of the so-called
Crimean Tatar Mejlis recently began to receive reinforcements
in the face of right-wing members of the Turkish terrorist group
                  'Grey Wolves'.

One of the organizers of the blockade of Crimea, Lenur Islyamov, on
his blog posted a photo with the Turkish fighters; "Turkish patriots
from the organization xxxkurtkar Turk Ulkuculeri, people call it --
'Grey Wolves', visited us at the blockade. The blockade is compressed",
                  -- signed 'Islyamov'.

'Grey wolves' (xxxkurtlar) appeared in the late 1960s as the youth
wing of the far-right "Nationalist Movement Party", which proclaimed
the goal of uniting all Turkish peoples in one state. Colonel
Alparslan of Turkey led the organization, and was an open admirer
of Hitler and Nazi ideas. The Turkish state, regardless of whether
it has formally forbidden the 'Wolves' or allowed them to emerge
from the underground, actively used them to suppress opposition and
promote foreign policy. On record there are hundreds of crimes by
'xxxkurtlar'. They killed trade unionists, activists of the Kurdish
movement, the Communists, protesting journalists and officials and
staged a massacre on May Day demonstrations in Istanbul in 1977. It
is believed that the crimes organized by the "wolves" death squads
in the Kurdish areas stand in thousands of civilians.

                  Logo of the Grey Wolves

Active Grey Wolves also operated abroad. They staged an assassination
attempt on the Pope in 1981. Now they are actively collaborating with
the terrorist underground in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region of
China, considering it part of the 'Great Turan'. In August of this
year, 'Wolves' staged an attack in the capital of Thailand, in which
19 people died and 123 were injured. In Europe the wolves organize
mass rallies in Turkey, they sometimes kill people in the Old World
of the Kurds, and defile the monuments to the Armenians and beat up
Chinese tourists. In recent years the "Grey wolves" focused on the
recruitment of people for war in Syria on the side of ISIL.

The fact that now the Crimean Tatar nationalists decided to cooperate
with 'xxxkurtlar', is not surprising, as well as the worsening
of Russian-Turkish relations. It is known that the Russian pilot,
catapulted from the downed Su-24, was shot by the son of the leader
of the "Party of the nationalist revival" and the Commander of 'the
Grey wolves', Alparslan celik. As was stated in an interview to
Aleksey Zhuravko, now, in the Kherson region, there are about 700
fighters of 'xxxkurtlar'. There are documented cases of attacks on
local residents. In Kherson region the wolves are going to create
                  some kind of 'Tatar Republic'.

But it would be bad if the wolves had acted only according to Erdogan's
will. Everything points to the fact that they are backed by the Turkish
leadership. But because of the threats issued by the radicals, their
presence around the border with Crimea should be taken seriously.

The links between the Turkish leadership and the Gray Wolves were also
revealed in September when Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the
grave of Colonel Alparslan, the founder of the terrorist organization.
