The growth of Iran during the last decade or so is what got it into the crosshairs of the Israel/USA. They do not want anyone powerful in that region nor anywhere else for that matter. I think the new thawing of relations between Iran and the west could be a trap for it. Iran has done many things right like developing its own defense and manufacturing industries along with science research...what puzzles me is why they do not have refineries?

That is good question.....I know Iran lost its most important scientists who were working in oil refining after the revolution but for some reason average Iranian still pays alot for petrol and Iran's export is a joke compared to the amount and the quality (grade of the oil's pureness) that they have underground (not counting gas).

Probably a combination of (1) effect of sanctions and not being able to bring in the necessary raw material for production and (2) backward idiotic government running own economy into the ground by focusing on extremist religion rather than governing a nation.

Those are not it Mher. Sanctions are a recent development while Iran has been producing oil a long time. That same "backward idiotic government" has managed to create a powerful home made military force and has increased its own strength and importance in the region without drawing attack from more powerful forces. Perhaps that government is not as idiotic as you may think.

The Customs Union, bringing together Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia,
and Israel have launched the work of a joint research group to study
the prospects for the creation of a free trade zone, the Eurasian
Economic Commission (EEC) reported on Tuesday.

The joint group is comprised of experts of the EEC, ministries and
departments of the Customs Union and the State of Israel, the Voice
of Russia reports.

According to EEC Trade Minister Andrei Slepnyov, "the task of the
research group is to conduct a deep system-oriented analysis of
the prospects for the creation of a free trade zone between the
countries." "The group is to determine which questions such an
agreement might cover and outline possible approaches to the mutually
advantageous settlement of sensitive issues for specific sectors,"
Slepnyov said.

On the results of their study, the experts will present a special
report and recommendations on the basis of which a decision may be
taken to launch negotiations on a free trade zone between the Customs
Union member countries and the State of Israel.

The EEC said that modern free trade agreements are aimed at creating
favourable conditions for the further development of trade-economic
co-operation. In addition to the classical issues of liberalization of
trade in goods through the reduction of customs duties, such agreements
often include other disciplines, for example, issues related to trade
in services and other measures of easing mutual investment activity,
the development of cross-border trade in services, ensuring the
necessary protection and encouragement of capital investment.

Not sure how Haykakan arrived at sanctions being relatively recent.
Ever since sha Mohamed Riza Pahlavi got the boot & the hostage incident Iran has been being crippled as best as the west could do with sanctions.
Mher's pointing to sanctions preventing "raw " materials coming in , I think is wrong. The prevention of technical refined and produced components coupled with Eddo's acknowledged brain drain in specific refining area coupled with huge capital outlay for refinery is most likely for lack of refinery capability.
Personally, I think it's a bad move on irans part to not persue refining as top national priority.
A key element that cannot be ignored.
If you look close at all operating refineries in USA & the refineries that have been shut down in last 10 years or so, then yo can see the game being played here right now. Very sleazy.
Diesel now costs more than premium gas. Greed ridden said it was because of lack of refining capability bla,bla,bla.
All lies.
They just shut down refinery 15 miles outside of Fairbanks for bla,bla,bla reason. Nonsense. I penetrated that refinery. They never operated at 90% of capacity. It's a road game of oil industry taking place to continue their theft and manipulation.
They take a situation and introduce complexity to confuse so they can schuck & jive.
They are "sophisticated".

Diesel is one of the least refined of the petroleum products, premium gas is one of the most refined.
To charge more for diesel than gas was a PR coo for big business (the sophisticated) and nothing more than a perpretated fraud using "supply & demand" as a cover.
Blatant theft by the sophisticated, nothing more.

I found this to be a interesting development worth noting

simply in terms of economy, industry, and military, Iran was lightyears ahead in in 1979 than today. The only thing the Islamic government did was introduce some equality in terms of education and health care. Beyond that in just about every other way, the country has gone back decades in the past 35 years. By the way, the Shah was in no way a simple Western stooge. He was doing his best to create some independence from the West, and that might very well have been his undoing.

I could be mistaken, but as far as I know, virtually everything that is machined and all special tubing + any scrubbers for separating tar from lighter stuff and much more.
Virtually all their stuff came from the west tech and guidance for start up.
When Pahlavi ran and hostage thing happened, Iran had to start from scratch to get a spare part for anything western supplied and had to scramble to develope support system and gain knowledge to supply their own know how. Everywhere they turned for help (china/Russia) came with price tag/ conditions.
They were put in quite a bind.
All large extruded metals and machine shop work initially came from out of country.
When the west comes in to develope your resources, they try to give as little understanding as they can get by with. They want others to be dependent on them.
I'm sure things are changing now, but Iran in essence was forced to start from scratch.

Also, when Pahlavi and his clique left, they took as many billions as they could.
In the thousand oaks/newbury area of Ventura , one day the Persians came in force and bought all (all) the gas stations. Apparently they don't pump gas and they all switched to self serve.
It was amazing to see this sudden change. I came to town and went to friend who used to own gas station. He told me Persians came with big money and bought everyone. They don't offer any service. Friend built brand new mechanic garage to keep his clientele.
USA benefited tremendously from that stolen wealth, Iran suffered tremendously.
