Looks like the azeris have enough oil left in producing Vaseline to appease its population.
"Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli was Azerbaijan’s first offshore oil Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) contract with Western majors, and was hailed as “the Contract of the Century”. ...
The field has received U.S. support, and U.S. companies have been involved in its development as it was seen as a giant resource that could undermine Russia’s dominance in European energy supply. But the promise of possible new finds near the giant field never materialized, and Azerbaijan tightened its grip on energy assets via SOCAR."

Surprising that I haven't seen any comments from any Armenian outlets on this important turn of events.
What is the oil community saying?
"Very interesting I have a good knowledge of the ACG field and they have not even built the last rig for it yet the detailed design is starting early next year. There was an extension to the profit sharing in 2017 that extends now until 2049 instead of 2024 but that led to a dilution of the ownership to foreign companies and an increase to the Azeri government but still a good return. All I can suggest is that they are pulling out as they can probably get a good price right now since the agreement has been extended and they can sell on a multiple of prospective earnings as now there is a longer agreement in place plus the dying interest from the US means they are probably more worried about the Azeri government trying to lean on them at a later date. This therefore is probably the high tide mark. Who will buy will be interesting will BP go all in or will Azeri government hoover it up to then have a bigger stake than BP. Dangerous for BP the latter. A story to watch for me."

"I have had the pleasure of working in Baku both onshore and offshore it’s a really interesting place. Quite ironic that the corner stone of the legendary Spice Road and former vanguard of the oil industry is now a road block. The Caspian Sea is probably the most logistically difficult region to explore and produce Oil. Only a handful of exploration rigs are available to the point some rigs were built in big parts and transported there to be rejoined. I think the pull out is pure cost it’s just not a viable risk in the current uncertain oil market. The picture shows the predominant solution for offshore production 100s of Kms of roadways to access offshore fields, known as “oily rocks” it’s very a very impressive solution."

Interesting news that went unnoticed?
"Exclusive: Exxon, Chevron seek to exit Azerbaijan's oil after 25 years
Exxon is hoping to raise up to $2 billion from the sale of its 6.8 percent in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field in the Caspian Sea, according to industry sources.
Rival Chevron said in a statement to Reuters it had also decided to launch the sale of its 9.57 percent stake in ACG as well as its 8.9 percent interest in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline.
BP said it had no information about Exxon’s or Chevron’s plans."

OPEC is trying really hard to keep oil prices over the $50.00 mark. Let us hope it will fail.
I think once it crosses the (- 50) mark it will go to around 35-45 for a while.

Crude Oil is edging to $50. Remember the azeris start showing signs of anal bleeding around $45 and minus. At around $75 they start wasting on major armaments. Let us hope 2019 prices will go down to $35.

"Azerbaijan's "dream" pipeline commissioned – but troubles remain
Construction was already behind schedule before Italy's newly elected Euroskeptic government last week announced that it saw no reason to support the project and launched a "review." That has raised the specter of construction being canceled, leaving the Southern Gas Corridor incomplete, TANAP without an export route, and Azerbaijan itself without a major source of income from gas sales."
A gas pipeline from Azerbaijan to Europe is designed to compete with Russia, but Italy’s new Euroskeptic government stands in the way

"Malta losing money 'hand over fist' from Azerbaijan energy deal, claim experts
A whistleblower gave a cache of data to the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed by a car bomb in October.
Some of the material concerns a deal with Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil and gas company Socar, worth more than €1bn, under which Malta agreed to import all the gas needed to supply its power stations for the next 10 years.
Over the past year, Malta has paid at least €131.6m ($153m at annualised exchange rates) for its gas – nearly twice the open market rate."

Sharp decline in Azerbaijani oil output in March 2018
Azerbaijan produced 740,000 b/d of crude oil and 54,000 b/d of condensate, exported 629,600 b/d of crude oil, 54,000 b/d of condensate and 10,600 b/d of oil products in March 2018. According to Energy Ministry, average production by Azerbaijan made up 814,600 barrels of oil per day in January, 806,000 barrels in February in accordance with the agreement on keeping daily output at 834,000 barrels per day. Daily output was decreased by about 10.0 % in March compared with February 2018.
Meanwhile, 38.7 million tons of crude oil and 28.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas were produced in Azerbaijan in 2017, according to the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). The company produced 7.4 million tons of crude oil and 6.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the reporting period.
Since the country produced 41.0 million tons oil in 2016, Azerbaijani oil output declined by 5.7 % in 2017, compared to the previous year. In general, the oil output in Azerbaijan has declined since 2010, according to SOCAR’s figures. The oil output of Azerbaijan was 50.79 million tons in 2010, 45.62 million tons in 2011, 43.38 million tons in 2012, 43.48 million tons in 2013, 42.02 million tons in 2014, 41.58 million tons in 2015 and 41.03 million tons in 2016. Official figures confirm that Azerbaijani oil production declined by 24%, or 12.1 million tons, in 2017, compared to 2010.
CESD experts underline that there are some reasons behind Azerbaijan’s declining oil output. Firstly, oil reserves in Azerbaijan have declined over last decade. 440 million tons oil have been produced from the Azeri, Chirag fields and the Deep Water Portion of the Gunashli Field (ACG) in the Azerbaijan Sector of the Caspian Sea since 1994. Secondly, the Government of Azerbaijan has been trying to have a gradual decline in oil production in order to minimize the “sharp output decline” risk. Thirdly, maintenance work on oil platforms impacts oil volume, too. During the year, SOCAR conducted 138 thousand meters of drilling work. Of this amount, 93% fell to the share of development drilling and 7% to exploration drilling. Lastly, Azerbaijan has reduced daily oil output by 35000 barrel since 2016, based on the agreement between Azerbaijan and OPEC.
Meanwhile, CESD experts are alarmed by the fact that production costs for Azerbaijani crude oil have increased over the last decade. According to SOCAR reports, it costs 20.0 USD to produce a barrel. Based on cost and production volume, CESD does not expect that Azerbaijan will once again have a huge income from oil export. CESD forecasts that State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ)’s annual income will be about 6.0-7.0 billion USD with barrel prices between 60-70 USD.

Azerbaijan and BP Cement Ties Through 2050
September 14, 2017 ,
by David O'Byrne

The government of Azerbaijan signed a new production sharing agreement (PSA) with the consortium operating the Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli oil field in the Caspian. The new deal gives Baku a much larger stake in the field and establishes Azerbaijan's economic ties to Europe for decades to come.
The agreement, signed September 14, has taken five years to negotiate and runs until 2050. It sees Azerbaijan's state oil company Socar increase its stake in the field from 11.65 percent to 25 percent, with stakes held by its eight international partners falling proportionally.
The field's operator, BP, now holds 30.37 percent and the other seven partners under ten percent each.
The international partners also agreed to pay a "bonus" of $3.6 billion into Azerbaijan's State Oil Fund and to further investment in the field which in the short term could see the addition of a seventh production platform and as much as $40 billion invested over the lifetime of the agreement.
The new agreement replaces the existing AGC PSA signed in 1994, by then Azeri President Heydar Aliyev, father of current president Ilham Aliyev.
Both Aliyev and BP chief executive Bob Dudley called the agreement "historic."
The new agreement "is of crucial importance for Azerbaijan`s future development," said Aliyev, who took to twitter to celebrate the accomplishment. "Today Azerbaijan is recognized in the world as a country, which stands on its feet and has broad international relations, and as an influential country."
Although at the time dubbed "the contract of the century", the terms of the 1994 agreement reflected the conditions of the time, with oil prices falling, Azerbaijan having just emerged from a civil war, and offshore production in the Caspian sea a new and risky area of investment.
ACG reserves at the time were estimated at only around 511 million million tons.
Now with Azerbaijan having developed significantly on the back of the $125 billion profit earned from ACG, Caspian investment being no longer viewed as risky, and estimates of ACG reserves having been doubled, Baku has been in a strong enough position to negotiate considerably better terms for the next phase of operation.
This is expected to produce a further 570 million million tons of crude and around 150 billion cubic meters of gas on top of 430 million million tons of crude and 134 billion cubic meters of gas already produced. .
Production from ACG is currently running at around 585,000 barrels per day of crude which is exported to global markets through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil line, down from a peak of 835,000 barrels per day in 2010. That could rise again with further investment, however.
Gas production is running at around 33 million cubic meters per day, mostly consumed locally but with talks underway for future gas production to be fed into state oil producer SOCAR's TANAP gas export line. That pipeline is now being constructed to carry gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz gas field through Turkey to Europe.
Further talks are anticipated over "deep gas" reserves in the field, below the oil and gas layer currently being exploited.
This deep gas layer is through to contain a further 200 billion cubic meters of gas which could also be fed into TANAP and exported to Europe.
Azeri officials have indicated that development of this deep gas reserve would need to be subject to a third production sharing agreement but have not indicated when they expect talks to commence or when the field could be developed.
Developing the ACG deep gas field would help Azerbaijan to fill the 15 billion cubic meters per year of available capacity in TANAP, without having to resort to accepting gas from other potential suppliers such as Iran or the Kurdistan region of Iraq, both of which have expressed interest in using TANAP as a means of exporting gas to Europe.
