Ahh… to be an English teacher in the Peace Corps… This from volunteers in Azerbaijan (who are apparently from Oregon, making them automatically extremely cool people).
In one of Dan’s classes, he had his students learn the song “Imagine” by John Lennon. He was so proud of his students learning the meaning of the words, and the overall message of brotherhood and peace. He gave a great speech on how imagination was the great fear of all authoritarian societies. At the end of the class, when he asked the students “What do you imagine is possible?” the best student stood up and said, “I imagine that we can kill Armenia and take back our land.” Not exactly what John Lennon had in mind, but at least he said it in English.
I think you have to have taught English overseas to truly appreciate the deep beauty of that last sentence.
