YEREVAN (Armenpress)--An exhibition entitled “William Saroyan and Armenia” opened Tuesday at Armenia's National Archives building. It is dedicated to the centennial of the prominent Armenian-American author.
The exposition showcases some 55 documents, letters and newspaper articles about Saroyan's visit to Armenia, where he uttered the famous words, “I am Armenian, I love the Armenian people, I love Armenia.”
National Archives director Amatuni Virabian said the exhibit was a joint initiative with Yeghishe Charents Literary Museum and aimed to highlight several episodes in the colorful life of the Fresno-native writer.
“Though there is no need to present William Saroyan in Armenia, as every Armenian knows who he is, has read some of his works without which it is difficult to imagine Armenian and American literatures of the 20th century, the exhibition is another occasion for us to celebrate him and his works,” he said.
The opening ceremony was attended by Culture Minister Hasmik Poghosian, who said the exhibition is a tribute to Saroyan, who wrote in English but thought in Armenia.
