I met him.

One of my friends did stuntwork on The Wire, so when I came across Mr. Mardirosian, I couldn't resist introducing myself. Mardirosian was delighted to meet a fellow Armenian and told me to call him Tom. I asked him why his characters on both Oz and The Wire were Greek and he told me that the role of Busmalis was originally supposed to go to a Greek-American actor of considerable repute, but he backed out at the last minute due to his having problems with anal rape scenes as well as a terminal illness. Mardirosian got the part, and he did such a good job at portraying a character of Greek descent that the creators made him play another one.
