Anania Shiragatsi actually claimed the earth was round in the 7th century. I confess that I do not know much about him, but it seems like he was a brilliant mathematician.

Apparently, a world congress of Mathematicians was organized in India some time in the 20th century, and a young 21 year old Armenian PhD (I forget his name, Sergey panme-yan) was there representing the USSR.

A British man approached our young genius and told him "You know, everyone knows that Armenians are good workers. They make good carpenters, shoemakers, etc. However, I never knew you had any talent in science and math". To which our friend replies "One of my people claimed the earth was round in the 7th century, while your people were burning people on stakes for claiming such a thing centuries later."

And that was my patriotic/chauvinistic moment of the day.
