    Re: Famous Armenians in Science

From what I remember..Damadian recognized the application of the MRI, and created the first MRI machine that can be used on people. Two other guys actually invented the process of MRI.

Damadian discovered the heart of MRI, that healthy cells react differently to a magnetic field than sick cells do. The actual process of MRI is nothing but creating a very specific magnetic field that affects all the cells. Without Damadian's discovery there's no such thing as an MRI.

In an effort to bring the discussion back to "Famous Armenians in Science".
and to add to the list....

I feel it's only appropriate to mention my former boss and a world wide known medicinal/organic chemist Prof. Stephen Hanessian.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging was not discovered by Damadian, which is why he didn't get the Nobel Prize. He did find that cancerous cells show up differently than normal cells, and he used this to create the MRI machine. Should he get a Nobel prize for discovering MRI? No. Should he get it for discovering the application of MRI, and creating a machine which can be used directly to diagnose cancer? Definitely.
