Reading this thread helped me understand why the members of the Yans Club, in Paris - who spell their Last Name using the "ian" ending - suffer of split personality. Thank you! It confused me for so many years.

But if the individuals last name ends with an ian it usually means that they are Beirut or areound that area.

Or the US, France, Greece, Bulgaria, Argentina, Brazil....

sorry but thats wrong, if an armenian is from TURKEY their last names are YAN because when you say IAN in turkish it is pronounced wrong, it sounds like ee an...so therefore people with last names that end with YAN are from western armenia...alot of armenians from armenia have yan because their ancestors were refugees from the genocide and eventually made it over to armenia for safety...

well thats a reall technical question, it obviously has to go back to your dads dad dad etc. alot of it is because when families move here to the united states they change their last names to fit the grammar. also, the armenians in beirut and syria dont use the latin alphabet only armenian and arabic...so once they come here they translate it accordingly...

Ironically, Arabic characters - not Latin - were used in the Ottoman Empire - just like in Syria and Lebanon - and the choice between "ian" or "yan" was not an "issue???".

there is no difference between any armenians in the world all of us are what we are :ARMENIANS and the same hehe...there is no need to say or even think that armenians from armenia have ego or anything...dont let a few alter the ideas of many we are one we have one cause and we shall solve it together... Atleast that is what i think....

''yan'' is the russified version of ''ian''.

i agree about the russian distinction but yan is also turkified too since ian sounds like eean instead of yan in turkish...
