  • Uniquely Armenian Names

There are a lot of names in our culture that I've always thought are uniquely Armenian. For example one of our greatest names - Vardan. But, as it turns out, it's a Parthian name, which was adopted by our people. Once Parthia was gone the name became Armenized and after the Battle of Avarayr the name firmly, and rightly so I may add, found its place in our culture for eternity.

But Vardan is not the only Parthian name we have. There are many Armenized Parthian and Iranian names that are very popular in our culture to this day. For example: Tigran, Artak, Gurgen, Anahit, Suren, Narineh, Karen, Zaruhi, Vacheh, etc.

So, the purpose of this thread is to invite all our members to present here Armenian names that they believe are uniquely Armenian in their origin. Not Parthian/Iranian, not Arabic, not Greek, not Hebrew, not Turkish, not Russian... only Armenian.

Here is my list of just some of Armenian names that I believe are of truly Armenian origin:

    Hayk

    Naneh

    Garegin

    Arevik

    Parouyr

    Hasmik

    Drastamat

    Knarik

    Hrayr

    Iskuhi

    Gegham

And below are my comments to each of the names but please bare in mind that I'm not a specialist in this area so I could be wrong too.

Սեւակ - Sevak is Uniquely Armenian (UA)

        Սրբուհի - Srbuhi is UA

Սարմէն - Sarmen? Sorry but I've never heard this name before

        Մաքրուհի - Maqruhi is UA

        Սեւան - Sevan is UA

Հայկուհի - and of course is Haykuhi

        Սիփան - and Sipan

        Վարդուշ - Vardush is UA

Ծաղկոյշ - i think its a form of Tsoghik, which is genuine Armenian

Նւարդ - Nvard is an interesting one as it consists of Persian Nav (new) and Armenian Vard (rose). This name is probably the best example of how much Persian culture influenced our people in the past.

        Արա - uniquely ours

Մլէ - as for Mle I'm not too sure. On one hand I know that we had a few historical figures by this name (princes etc) but on the other hand I also know that it's a popular name with Yezidis of Armenia.

Արմէն - Armen is the short form of Armenak which was the name of Hayk Nahapet's eldest son.

Հրաչ( ուհի) - is the short for of Hrachya, which as Armenian as it gets.

Վրոյր - Vruyr is also ours

        Անի - so is Ani

Ժիրայր -so would be Jirayr because of the ending ayr

Աստղիկ - Astghik is no doubt ours

        Նորայր - Norayr too

        Լուսիկ(Լուսինէ) - Lusine is UA

        Հայբերդ - Hayberd is UA

Խաչատուր ( Խաչիկ, Խեչո ) - and Khachatur too

Սեդրակ - but Sedrak is definitely not Armenian, it is of Hebrew origin

Գալուստ - Galust is an Armenian

Նարէ - I think Nare is Armenian

Գարեգին - Garegin is most definitely uniquely Armenian

Սիրան - I'm not sure about Siran as it is not the same name as Siranush, which is definitely Armenian and comes from Sirun and Anush. But Siran I don't know, it could have a Persian origin.

        Սիրվարդ - Armenian

Հրանդ - Hrant is definitely Armenian

Մերուժ - so is Merouzh - Our Might

Վրէժ - and Vrezh - Our Justice

        Վարուժան - UA.

Movses is the Armenian version of Moses, which is the Greek form of the original Hebrew name Moishe.

Movses Khorenatsi brought us the Hayotz Patmutiun, which is The Bible of our Nationalism therefore I consider Movses a very significant name for us.

Vartanush... does it have to necessarily be based on Vardan, and not Vart-Anush?

              You are right.

I think its based on Vard (the flower) and Anush. So it is an Armenian name.

If I have a daughter, it would be funny if I called her Nver and spelled it Never.
