Are these the same dogs as the Anatolian Shepherd or referred to as Kangal in Turkey?

Gampr’s recognition as Armenian dog breed seen as “important” in Armenia

Armenian dog-breeders are relishing the news of an Armenian wolfhound’s listing as an internationally recognized breed.

In a development largely viewed as important for the nation’s dog-breeding credentials abroad, the Breed Committee of the International Kennel Union (IKU) last month officially entered the Gampr in its register as Armenia’s national dog breed.

The Armenian Gampr is a breed of livestock guardian dog that originated in the Armenian Highlands and was bred by local people using primitive selection.

The modern Gampr has changed little within the history of its existence. Gamprs differ by their vital capacity, independence, mind, strong self-preservation instinct, ability of the trustworthy defense and protection of livestock, and exclusive friendliness to humans.

At a press conference in Yerevan on Tuesday Violeta Gabrielyan, the president of the Cynological Union of Armenia, called the Gampr’s recognition after longstanding efforts from Armenia’s dog-breeding community as “a great victory” for Armenia. She said it will also raise the country’s “recognizability” abroad.

According to Gabrielyan, Armenia today has more than 2,000 Gampr hounds.

A major international dog exhibition also featuring Gampr wolfhounds is due to be held in Armenia on May 22.

I was always wondering why they did that. I guess it makes sense now.

If they continue to be bred along different lines in the 3 caucasus republics, they could possibly become different breeds in time. In Armenia, its called Gampr. My uncle in Armenia owns, breeds, and fights gamprs, and some of them are so fierce that I have seen them choke the pit bulls neck and wolves in a 1 on 1 fight and kill them.

If you ever decide to buy a gampr, or any dog, for that matter, DO NOT buy them from the AKC stock. AKC dogs are weak, pathetic, sickly dogs. SImply put, Americans can't produce dogs. BE SURE to buy any dog from overseas. You can buy a gampr from Armenia.

They come in two forms: one is short hair the other is long hair. Ears are cropped.

here is a book you should buy and read:

Thanks for the info, the book looks like it would be useful to read.

It's funny but I actually had a discussion with my husband and he thought a pit bull would beat the Gampr but I did not agree. This proves my point.

I am almost a little scared to own a Mountain Dog now after all the comments about the ferocity of the breed. How safe can you or your family & friends really be?

Artsakh, I'm impressed. Brotherly advice, drop the politics, you seem to be much better at walking dogs

Maybe you can walk Levin Petrostein's dog

And which of the 3 Caucasian nations has the best version in your opinion or that of a dog expert? Also, I think chobans are in turkey as well, or a similar variety called Anatolian Sheep dog or something like that.
