My wife & I have decided when its time to buy a dog we will go to a shelter, we feel more comfortable knowing that it will have all it's shots & is healthy.

Going to the shelter is great, but don't count on the dog being healthy. Your best assurance of health is getting a puppy from a breeder who does regular health screenings. You'll pay top dollar for that though. My dog was 2k.

Don't just go in blind either and take the first dog that's cute or seems to like you. You need to research the breeds and know what you're looking for. Lots of diseases are common to particular breed. You should be aware of that. Temperament will probably be more important to you. My dog for example is a total companion dog. Someone who's not home a lot would be a fool to get this breed.
Likewise, you shouldn't get a working breed if you don't have a lot of time (1hr per day) to exercise them. Examples of working and/or high energy dogs are: Rottweilers, Greyhounds, sheepdogs, most terriers (inc jack russell), German Shepherds, Boxers, pit bulls, etc. If you get a big dog and it doesn't get enough exercise, you'll have a very expensive problem b/c they will destroy your house. Even a small dog will do damage. Some are bigger chewers than others. Obedience training is a must too. If you can get a young dog, it's better because you can socialize (so it won't be fearful or aggressive) and train before it develops lots of bad habits. Hard to find puppies in shelters sometimes though.

My wife's granfather had three small dogs named "Neef-Neef, Naaf-Naaf and Nuuf-Nuuf"
I'm not sure he knew what named belonged to what dog...

Please please please don't buy a dog unless you're home a whole lot and are going to put in the time for training. If you do though, don't get one from a backyard breeder or pet store, go to a reputable breeder or a shelter if you can't afford it.

I used to have a dog in Armenia named Chalo

I had two puppies call Sharik(marble) and forgot the other ones name

Now i have 2 bunnies called Poonchic and Foonchic

Really? Usually most Armenian families with pets have an Armenian name for the animal.
