  • My last name Azeri or Armenian??

Hello Armenians, I am a teen living in Canada born in Iran with the last name Ayrumlu. I am very curious to know as to where this last name originates as I have heard that it is not of Persian origin. Any information about where you think or know this last name originates from would be very helpful. Thanks.

Oh, and I know that my grandfather was born in Baku.

It's probably azeri, but you never know. For example Armenian last names usually almost end in ian or yan, although there are many persians/iranians with the same ending that have no armenian roots, even though their last name ends in a yan/ian

Also some armenians changed the suffixes according to where they lived, many changed to -ov in russia and -oglu in Turkey, and so on. My advice is to take in account your grandfathers first name and it's orgin, also, what his religion was, ask your parents about him if you can as well

Ayrumlu sounds very Turkish. IF there is a place called "Ayrum" Ayrum-lu would mean "from Ayrum". There are many names in Turkish with the suffix -li -lu -lı -lü which means ...from...

Ayrum also sounds like "Ayrım" which means "separation" or which may mean "difference". High chance your name is Turkish-Azeri.

This interpretation would violate the meaning of the the -lu ending, since it's restricted as a toponomic (geographic place) suffix. Ayrum has to be a place. Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayrum

          There's an Ayrum in Armenia.

          Now check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayrums

"Ayrums (Azeri: ayrım; Armenian: այրում) were a Turkic-speaking tribe in the Caucasus. They became assimilated by Azeris and possibly Armenians in the late 19th century. Some Azeris from the Gazakh-Agstafa region may still be aware of their Ayrum roots. Toponyms derived from the word "Ayrum" still exist (or existed until recent decades) in northwestern Azerbaijan and northeastern Armenia, e.g. Mets Ayrum, Pokr Ayrum, Baganis-Ayrum, Polad-Ayrum, Gushchu-Ayrum, etc."

Interesting history. Given the fact that you have a Turkish suffix after Ayrum, I'd say that you got it from Azeris with 60-70% certainty.

I agree with above poster. However, I've asked the word "ayrum" to my Azeri roommate and he told they don't have such a word. Though they use the suffix -lı,-li,-lu,-lü in the same way as we Turks do. The word maybe distorted, I'd advise you to gather more background info about your grandfather.

Lets not forget, that Turkish was a first tongue to many Armenians in western Armenia along with rest of the other minorities.Turkish speaker/user or name does'nt automatically mean an ethnic Turk.

yes, which is why I left my bet that he got that name from Azeris at 60-70% certainty.

Re: My last name Azeri or Armenian??

Yeah I think it is Azeri as well although I did see that Wikipedia says the word "Ayrum" possibly comes from "Hayhurum" and if you look you will notice that an "H" is taken off at the beginning and the "hu" which seperates "Hay" from "Rum" is also taken off. And that same articles states that "Hay" means Armenian in Armenian and "Rum" means Greek in Armenian. So could this possibly mean that my last name's meaning is "Armenian and Greek" or something like that due to the presence of Byzantine Greeks in the area at that time?

Also, that same grandfather of mine that is born in Baku, his paternal grandfather was born in Astrachan, Russia. And his maternal family were Azeri Kurds. That's a bit a background info.
