  • Armenian Adoption

    Hello,

This is my first post to your group. I'm not Armenian so I hope you don't mind me being here. I will be bring home 2 Armenian Angels in a few months through international adoption. (We live in the US) I think it's very important for my children to grow up knowing their history and culture so I'm trying to learn more about it myself.

I've been trying to connect with the Armenian community where I live, without much luck. I live in Kansas City Missouri and have found internet listings for 2 different Armenian Churches and the mention of a school, but I haven't had any luck reaching anyone at the numbers/emails listed. If anyone here knows how I can connect with the Armenian community in KC, I would love a contact. If not, I hope I can learn from reading your posts and maybe ask a question or two.

    Thanks,
    NBIPAKC

    I found this listing,
Armenian Apostolic Church of Kansas City c/o Mr. Zaven Hatutian 210 West 75th Street Kansas City, MO 64114 - Tel: 816-333-1467

here, List of Armenian Churches in the USA, under one of the "outreach" churches. Out reach churches are in areas with not a substantial amount of Armenians, they usually only meet once a month, if they can get a priest flown in.

If you can't contact them, your best bet is to just research as much as you can, or as much as you want anyways.

If you would like to learn Armenian, to help the kids retain their culture, you can order cd's here (there are also sample lessons). Eastern Armenian is the dialect spoken in Armenia, so you may want to get that one.

As far as history goes, there are plenty of books you could find. For a quick overview you can look here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Armenia

As far as cooking goes, Anahid's Gourmet Cookbook is good. Don't order it off the page i gave though, i'm sure there are cheaper ones at other sites, I just couldn't think of any right now.
