has made a discernible difference
in the life of the nation or community.

that’s the only assertion I can make

“I don’t have to understand you – I am you!”

When depressed I count our moral victories.
As for real victories: I would count them too
if I knew one.

who among us will dare to suggest
he is too smart to be fooled?

Have I ever been successful in fooling anyone?
I don’t remember.
If I have I suspect my target only pretended
to be fooled not to hurt my feelings.

If everything worth saying has been said before,
our only option is to repeat
only that which is worth repeating.

Speak of your faith in humanity
only if you can afford bodyguards;
even then “Speak softly and carry a big stick!”

When I write I assume I am dealing with
reasonably decent readers
capable of using their common sense.
A big mistake that one!

ON SURVIVAL

We share with animals
the instinct to survive, with one difference:
when successful, animals don’t brag about it.
We could learn from them.

We are carefully taught to brag
about our celebrities and
even more systematically and carefully taught
to ignore the mediocrity of our political leadership.
*
To brainwash may not be a crime against humanity
but to see nothing wrong in it is worse than a crime,
it's a blunder!
*
I repeat myself, granted,
but never as often as our children are taught
to brag about Mikoyan and Gulbenkian.
*
In a world where men like Gulbenkian
and Mikoyan are successful,
I see more merit in failure,

EXPLAINING THE SITUATION.

One reason I write as I do is that
I can be of greater service to my fellow countrymen
as a dissident than as a dupe of propaganda.

We all make mistakes, granted.
But some of us learn not to repeat them.

Even on the eve of the Genocide
we were divided, one side maintaining
Turks wouldn’t dare
because the whole world was watching.

Imagine a second Greco-Trojan war.
If the Trojans had been Armenians
they would divide themselves
on the grounds that the gift horse
on the other side of their walls
was not a horse but a jackass.

Even as we behave like certified morons
we brag about our IQ!
