    Re: diary

    A BROTHER
    ***************************
He is that most repellent of all creatures – an ignorant, loudmouth, self-satisfied, smart-ass know-it-all, in short, myself when young. He makes me think of the octogenarian born-again Armenian reader who once told me he hates Turks not because they tried to exterminate us but because they failed to do so. Instead of analyzing our catastrophic blunders, he brags, speechifies, and sermonizes in the name of God and Country—a God he knows nothing about and a Country that he pretends to value more than his fellow countrymen.

You cannot reason with someone who says
      “Talk to my lawyer,” or
      “Talk to my theologian.”

        FRAGMENTS
        ********************************
        Notwithstanding my loathing
of our academics, ghazetajis, sermonizers and speechifiers,
I understand them because once upon a time
I too was willing to parrot any line
in exchange of a regular salary.
        *
I have nothing to brag about
except the fact that I survived
        sixty Siberian winters
        in the middle of nowhere.

The easiest thing in the world:
to convince yourself you are right
even when you are dead wrong.

Survival comes with a price. The body may survive, but the spirit, that’s different.

If you have not yet heard Beniamino Gigli singing "Quanto spunta la luna a Marechiar," I envy you, because you can now look forward to the thrill of listening to one of the most beautiful songs in the world sung by one of the greatest tenors that has ever lived.

              Women are smarter than men
because they negotiate from a position of strength
              by pretending to be weak.

                NOTES / COMMENTS
                ******************************
Writers and benefactors share this in common:
they will never get the respect they deserve.

“If you have trouble drawing an object,
try drawing the space around it.”
                *
You may be forgiven for being wrong,
                but for being right, never!
                *
Whoever said do not judge a man
                by his opinion of himself,
should have added: the same applies
                to belief systems and ideologies.

                  NOTES / COMMENTS
                  *******************************
A friend from England informs me
a prominent British politician is a Turk.
My first thought: If he is, he must be half-Armenian.
                  *
After long centuries of cohabitation and concubineage,
I doubt if there is a single Turk or Armenian left.
                  *
Our Turcocentric ghazetajis prefer to write about Turks
probably because the alternative would be more depressing.
                  *
We pretend to admire our great writers
to cover up the fact that we think and behave
                  like their executioners.
                  *
I write as I do because no one is paying me to lie.
                  *
Would I lie for 30 pieces of silver?
I have already done so for less than a single piece of silver.

The best things in life are free?
                    Maybe, provided you also remember
you pay most for the things you get for nothing.

Being an Armenian is a rare privilege,
or so I was brought up to believe,
until I realized it is closer to being a nightmare.
