I posted a Circassian-Armenian joke in the Balance thread not too long ago, and I have just been thinking about the role of modern-day Kuban in Armenian identity.
During the Middle Ages, tens of thousands of Armenian nobles and others migrated to Cilicia in order to escape war and strife in our highlands. After migrating, they established their own kindgom which later became a Crusader state and fell to its enemies. Most of the Armenians living in this region were exterminated by the Turk 101 years ago. Today, Cilicia is empty of its Armenian heritage and no longer has a role a physical role in our identity.
Cilicia is not the only place Armenians migrated to in the Middle Ages to escape suffering. Many Armenians migrated to Circassia and founded the modern-day city of Armavir, naming it after our ancient capital. Today, there are hundreds of thousands of Armenians living in Kuban/Circassia and the region has seemingly replace Cilicia in the hearts of many Armenians.
I'd like to make this thread in order to discuss the development of the Armenian community in the region and our cultural contributions.
There are 400-500 thousand Armenians living in Kuban region.
