*******************************************
SPIES
*******************
My first thought on meeting a fellow Armenian:
Will I ever be successful in convincing him
I am neither a crook nor a liar?
*
An elder statesman on Zarian:
“He was a agent of the CIA and the KGB.”
The evidence?
He survived to a ripe old age in both
America and the Soviet Union.
*
Nothing comes more naturally
to a partisan Armenian than to think:
“If he is not one of us,
he must be with the opposition.”
*
After several decades of hard work
dedicated to Armenian literature,
the question that I ask myself against and again:
We survived Turks. Will we survive Armenians?”
*
Was Zarian an agent of the CIA and the KGB?
I don’t know.
My guess is, on entering the U.S. and the USSR
he was questioned by agents of the government,
as I was by agents of the Canadian government.
