nunechka: Ihave no idea. We used to sing it in elementary school. I've been bugging my friends to remember the lyrics, but they can't. All I remember is "ayppenaran mer hayots"...I don't think Aznavour would sing it though...

spiral: i had never bothered listening to the whole thing before -- thanks! what dialect is that in, if it's even in armenian?! i can hear some armenian here and there - but wow, i can't believe i never realized how foreign the lyrics are!

That song is probably the one song that has survived the longest in Armenian music. I think it might date back to the early 1900s and quite possibly even in the 1800s. All I know is that it dates back many years but not quite sure when.

I don't know what you meant; but there exists hundreds of documented songs from the middle ages. Some as early as the 7th century.

It seems that there are at least 1166 documented songs or chants and some may date as early as early Christian times in Armenia.
