    Re: The Diaspora

Ace, certainly living in Muslim countries is a factor that decreases Armenian assimilation, but even that is not enough. In Lebanon, the Armenian Church registered that 40% of its marriages in 1997 were mixed marriages. That is an alarming number, probably about the same in the US. And that is scary for the Lebanese Armenian community.

Iran is a special case. There, Armenians live in Muslim theocracy, so the religious factor is multiplied, and so the religious difference between Armenians and Persians is also multiplied, making assimilation much slower than in more liberal Muslim countries (ie, Lebanon, UAE, Kuwait, Syria).

Rostom: The Chinatowns around the country have only been "going strong" because new immigrants keep rejuvenating the community. That is precisely what happened in the US with the 1960s/1970s when Armenians began to come from the Middle East, and again in the 1990s when Armenians came from Armenia. New immigrants always help rejuvenate an ethnic immigrant community, partly because psychologically, you feel more tied to your heritage as there is power and presence in numbers (ie, more people know of Armenians, so you feel more comfortable identifying as such), and partly because the new immigrants fill up dying churches and establish new organizations and institutions.

The Armenian Church in Turkey registered a 70% inter-ethnic marriage rate between Armenians and Turks.

I think we should support and establish a set of beliefs that clearly seperates Armenians from our host societies - in every way we can.

You guys will deffinitly be against half the xxxx I propse, and call it "extremist."

I think if our people don't stay in Armenia, we may be assimilated. I have seen this happen all over the USA. Both of my children married odars, as did I.
I wish is were not so.

Talk is cheap. You don't get any extra points right now just because you say that. When you actually do move back, then you can "talk" all you want.
            this post = teh win.

Well, we have 2 houses in Armenia that we're rebuilding - and I doubt we're doing it for fun.

But the fact that I'm atleast slightly motivated to move back, or that I actually plan on it, is by far better than most Diasporians - who ADMIT to NEVER wanting to go back - something I think is most damaging to us.

They dont WANT to go back.

And shame on whoever married odars.

Why? If they want to fully assimilate, then what's that to us? Also, I don't mind marrying odars (depends on what kind though), if the odar agrees, the children can always be raised as Armenians.

Also, you are right, with many it is much about the "genocide obsession". Personally, I consider that the most shameful and humiliating period of our history, I don't want Armenians promoting victim mentalities.

Great about two houses but my point is, just saying you want to move back doesn't make you that much better than saying you don't want to move back. Either way, it doesn't make a bit of difference until someone actually moves back.
