In the latest issue of National Geographic an interesting map was present showing the number and percent of smokers in each country.
Not surprisingly Armenia ranks number one with the highest percent of male smokers in the world 70%. 3% of the females smoke in Armenia.
Re: Armenia National Geographic smoking statistics
That is quite surprising. I am even more so alarmed by the fact that 3% of armenian women smoke. I have never seen an armenian women smoking before so to be honest I wouldnt know how to react if I ever came across that situation. Now, I myself smoke. Its a disgusting habbit that literally chews at my bank account. I plan to quit. To be direct, I dont want to die young and in an unhealthy manner.
Here in the town I live in, the youth (12-18 years of age )alone make up 42% of the smokers population. Despite the fact that I too am a smoker, it never seizes to amaze me when I see a 14 year old walk by me with a cigarette in his/her mouth.

just your bank account, what about your lungs? im not preaching or anything btw. im a smoker too. though i smoke much much less than i used to, usually 4-5 a day, which is still bad.
smoking in Armenia is a big problem and it will take a lot of time and a lot of resources to change this because it is such a big part of the culture. that is part of the reason i started too, my father smoked, it didnt seem like the worst thing in the world, though i dont do drugs or anything like unlike many of my peers ( again, the result of culture, drugs are a huge huge taboo in Armenian families) smoking seemed ok. now i would give anything to go back and not have started smoking.
btw sweety, its "ceases" not "seizes". not being an xxxxxxx or anything just pointing out a mistake.
Re: Armenia National Geographic smoking statistics
I am aware of the damage it is doing to me. Thus the reason I placed the comment that I dont want to die young and in an unhealthy manner. Smokeing is stupid. Thats reality. But the problem I face is that I am so far from it, that I dont even know where to begin. But I suppose admiting it is always a good step.
I remember being 10 years of age and seeing my father smoking. I was curiouse. He never hid it from us. When I was 14 I started. I cant believe that my parents never showed any objection to it. I love my parents deeply. So very much but when I have children one day I would never allow him/her to put a cigarette in their mouth.
Lol, yes TigranJamharian. Not only am I not good at quitting I am also not very good at proper spelling. My mistake.
Re: Armenia National Geographic smoking statistics
I think there are several reasons why people in Armenia smoke so much.
The young kids who start thinks it’s cool, they think it’s a sign of adulthood even when they are only 14!
The adults who smoke are addicted and they have all the excuses in the world for not quitting.
The cigarette industry thrives on the smoking population.
The government completely lacks the desire or incentive to educate its population like the U.S. government has and still is in the United States.
Would it change to the better? I don’t know because from what I see here, Armenians smoke a lot here too, so yes I think it’s the culture thing.
Re: Armenia National Geographic smoking statistics
Smokin' is bad ummkay.
I never smoked and never wanted to. My dad smoked when I was little but quit a long time ago due to deteriorating health.
His brother smoked like a choo-choo train all his life and still does. One after the next after the next.
Why is it a big part of the culture? Why don't parents just tell their kids that smokin' is bad ummkay.
Seriously, I'm really pissed off about this statistic. The only resource that Armenia has at her disposal is her people resources and to polute it in such a way?
Re: Armenia National Geographic smoking statistics
What's worse is that in addition to the smoking, Armnians in general tend to drink vodka like fish ... Again I think in the case of the drinking, everything Alby has said applies.
