  • What does the name Dabaghian mean?

I found out a few years ago, after finding my birth mother, that she was Armenian. I was adopted and raised by a wonderful xxxish family, who are now gone. I have been married to my husband for over 35 years, who is Armenian.

But I would like to know what the name Dabaghian means, or if anyone knows a Jean Dabaghian?

Well, first of all, I think you should tell us what region of Ancient Armenia you are from... then, someone might be able to help you find out.

There are Armenians living in Constantinople (istanbul) with the surname 'Dabagyan' (read as Dabaghian). These people who have been living for generations in this city are originally from Van.
There is even a famaous writer from that family, 'Levon Panos Dabagyan'. You may find information about him through a short search at an internet search-engine. But Mr Dabagyan is not so popular among Armenian circles, because he is very very pro-turkish, I can even say that he is Turk with Armenian name.
About the meaning of that surname, unfortunately no idea. Maybe I can guess that it is derived form the Turkish word "tabak", which means dish/plate.

Dab(b)agh means 'tanner' (a person who tans skins to make leather), and it’s an Arabic/Persian word.

So Rose's ancestor(s) had a job of a tanner, right?
