  • Armenian Surnames. ian,yan,si,i

    Armenian surnames.

We all mostly have ian or yan as the endings for our names, commonly thought to denote " son of " there are others also but are not as common.

    Examples

    Heratsi, Narekatsi, Shnorhali, Shirakatsi, Tatevatsi.

I only new one family that was differant and their surname was Daranatsi ot Taranatsi.

I know that it denotes where a person it from, like Americatsi (a person from America.)

If any of you have any info, lets have an Armenian discussion.

    Respectfully

    Avak

PS: Hoping Armenian will join us.

    Re: Armenian Surnames. ian,yan,si,i

Actually, 'ancient' Armenians had surnames ending in tsi(Khorenatsi...), uni(Bagratuni...), unts(Bakunts...) rather than ‘ian’ or ‘yan’, which is an Iranian suffix, adopted later, denoting ‘belonging to’… (patkaneliutyunn e tsuyts talis). Obviously it was adopted later but I don't know when exactly.
