Oh wait a minute madame! butchered Armenian you say?! Based on what?
I say Lebanese-Armenian dialect is the finest of all.
A fine blend of Turkish, Arabic, French, English...

You may have a point there... We were the lucky ones that got butchered. So don't hold it against us!

I speak both and I can understand all. We should also get rid of the Russian influence in the Armenian language.

            Re: Western or Eastern Armenian

You don't have to be an Eastern Armenian from Tbilisi, Yerevan or Persia to read, understand and appreciate Hovhannes Tumanian's stories, Baruyr Sevag's poetry, Raffi's novels, or Sayat-Nova's lyrics. Nor do you have to be a Western Armenian from Istanbul to understand the writings of Krikor Zohrab, Daniel Varujan or Hagop Baronian.

If you know Armenian (Eastern or Western) at an intermediate or advanced level, Yerevan should be no problem for you. But keep in mind that nearly every region in Armenia has a different dialect. For example, I found the Artsakh dialect (or sub-dialect) to be very difficult to understand. In those cases the people will switch from the sub-dialect to standard Eastern Armenian.

[QUOTE=womble;177470]I am currently learning Western Armenian, but I would like to visit Armenia in the future and be able to understand people and to make myself understood. Would it be better to learn Eastrn Armenian, or is it easy enough for people to understand each other across the two dialects?[/QUOTE

womble it just which dialect you pick up faster & what your more comfortable with
